“need extra maintenance.... maybe total renovation..!!”
Reviewed December 28, 2011

wisma gajah is located in jalan prawirotaman, it is a great location to stay especially for foreigners.. a lot small cafes around...

From outside the guest house looks very cozy and natural.. but once we enter the room, all the furnitures were sooooo old.. i think from 1970th... well i do not mind to have old furnitures in the room as long as clean but yeahhhhhhh... talking about cleanliness, I do not know how to say... the bath room is big but dirty.. found cocroach, the toilet did not work... the shower... have no idea how to take shower with that...

We complained but i think the staff who was in charge need a customer service skill training.. we were not satisfied even they up graded us to bigger room...

The bigger room has TV.. size... 20cm x 20c i guess.. furniture still the old style and again the toilet does not work properly.. and off course the shower... thats why they provided the buckett so we had shower with the old style...

If they want to make it natural and old style, that's fine... but it just does not match, they havve bath tub and shower but we still has shower with the buckett...

The hotel has swimming pool, looks like being cleaned every morning but i still not convidence to jump in...

I am not the only person who complaint, but i heard few couples were argueing why they need to stay in that guest house.... mhmmmmm the uncomfortable stay will ruin the holiday and also possible ruin the relationship...

The guest house absolutely need a total renovation..........

Room Tip: Watch out with the tricycle bike - becak... they always put a high price and once you are exit the h...

We booked this gueshouse as a second choice, because our primary choice was fully booked. The room is very plain. Very bad and dirty shower. Nice and big swimming pool. Worst breakfast ever. All these downsides are made up by the price point. Very easy to bargain. We got a room rate at 225k/ night.

Don't be enticed by the pool. Prices are par for the course but the rooms and bathrooms are filthy. I had to change rooms three times. First one the door did not lock, second one the a/c was old and busted and the tub was scum lined and absolutely disgusting, the third room which was considered an upgrade, had a toilet that didn't flush and the water in shower wouldn't turn off.

We are staying here at the moment for 4 nights, with 2 small kids. It's reasonable value for money. We viewed a few other places on the same street before picking this one on basic of overall value-for-money and generally it meets our expectations for the price-level.

Note: outside high-season there is no need to book ahead in Yogya. Simply get a taxi at the airport and ask the driver to bring you to a street with lots of hotels and wait until you choose one. Our driver cost 60,000 Rupiah.

Pros:
+ good-sized swimming pool, nice to cool down as Yogya is very humid.
+ restaurant with quite low prices
+ reasonable room rate (200,000 Rp for double bed with aircon, plus 50000 for extra mattress)
+ alright location, NOT near the Malioboro area but not far from Sultan's palace (Kraton) and lots of Becak (richshaws) on the road outside which can be hired for very low prices by western standards (e.g. 10000 Rp for a trip to Malioboro, that's about 1 US dollar)
+ plenty of other hotels on the street if you change your mind!
+ a couple of decent restaurants on the street, and lots of ATMs
+ quiet
+ room reasonably roomy.

Cons:
- aircon not very effective, room still quite humid
- food in restaurant is so-so
- Room "functional" - plain, and bathroom old-fashioned. Not the place for you if you are very fussy.
