Absolutely enthralling views from the footsteps of Merapi. Everything is burnt, and in a morning fog, and then you get to see the peak for a brief 10 minutes - worth the travel, and the wait!

“Merapi is the soul of Jogja”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

I visited kaliadem , the lava dam not same anymore since my last visited in 2010.
Merapi already in the heart of local villager , they believe Merapi protect them from something bad and not good. that's why even Merapi active , they dont want to leave their own village,
because they know, merapi wont hurt them .
after the big eruption in 2011 , this location need more improvement to make tourist more attractive for visiting.

“Most active volcano on earth, no guide required”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

A 2hr scooter ride from Jogyakarta to the base camp through small villages is true Indonesia. No need for a guide. Stay at base camp just down the hill from the start of the trail. the walk is only 2-3 hours long so don't get up to early because it is freezing if you stop. There is lava at the top and for those wanting to climb other volcanoes, Gunungbagging.com is the best website with loads of information!!! I was lucky enough to catch another group on the climb that had started at 11pm. I left the base at 2am alone but soon found them taking it easy on the way up. they discovered they had left way too early. Views from the top are ok, there are definitely more spectacular volcanoes in indonesia. This one is the most active i guess thats why its a draw card. A good one to climb but not the best views wise.

“The most active volcano in Indonesia.”

Mount Merapi also call as Gunung Merapi in local. You can see those destroyed village after the last eruption in 2010 on the way to Gunung Merapi. Some arts painting on the wall is very special. When you near the peak, you can use a motortrail or offroad car to go to those village nearby. Motor cost around 100k rupiah and car cost around 250k rupiah.

There is really nothing much too see, unless you intend to join their jeep tour around the base of Mt Merapi from Kaliurang or Kinahrejo.
