“Splendiferous view and epic stories of overventuresome people.”
Reviewed November 13, 2012

Mount Merapi is an active strato-vocano that erupts frequently. It is situated in Central Java around 30 km from the histiric city of Yogyakarta. It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and, as learnt by us, it has been frequently erupting-- once in every few years--since 1548. Each eruption washes away the surrounding villages destroying not only property but also lives of many people and animals. Despite these destructions frequently taking place for a few centuries, thousands of people live in the surrouding flanks in villages having fertile land. Recent large eruptions took place in 1994, 2006 and 2010. But the villages in the flanks spreading as high as around 1500 meters above the sea level become lively agaIn in a short time after each eruption. A film was shown on the latest eruption which starts with a phrase: "Merapi never sleeps". The day we went to view Merapi, the sky was clear and we could watch the top of the mount clearly. In the beauty of the Merapi when it is dormant reminds the the repeated heroic struggle of the people in the surrounding villages when it is violent.,

Coming to this volcano mountain and visiting the more or less dead village was a strange feeling. More than 100 people died in the latest eruption just two years ago.

What I thought would be another tourist trap turned out to be a great adventurous trip ... We took the trip late evening .. probably last to leave the Willis stand .... The roads were clear .. no tourists .. no warungs ... just merapi, mist and moon .... it was an exhilarating experience ....

“Great Adventure”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

This is fantastic, every time nature destroy it, we leaving grieving it. But when we look deep into it, the nature give it back, sands, rocks, view and new adventure.

After the last eruption, now mount merapi area become the most exciting adventure i had in Jogjakarta. off road with a jeep, young, old can do.

Paid 300 thousand rupiah for a trip, its awesome and very worthed, the driver told us the storey about what happen on the time when merapi erupt. we had a very good and nice driver. can't enough praise him. i will share his phone number later, so anyone who want to go up, can call him, he will pick you at your hotel (depends on the area).

You can stop on the rest point to see the merapi, can drink the local jahe (warming and taste good). they sell it too, and that's how they live after merapi.

From some point, if you want to go up more, you need to rent a trail bike or using local ojek. 30 thousand rupiah or rent bike at 50 thousand rupiah. not expensive huh. that's a source of their living.

i will, and i want to go merapi again. it's beauty amaze me.

you can contact this person :-
Mr. Lilik +[--]

contact him, he's a great guy. service oriented.

ow... prepare a small money (5 thousand rupiah or so) because on the road trip, there's a few spot that you need to give a small tokens as support (must give). anyway... Rp. 5000.00 is only 50 cents in US$. oh cmon... don't be so stingy.
