“Great value hotel in a quiet part of Jakarta”
Reviewed August 7, 2012

A group of us stayed in a 3-bedroom apartment over a weekend in a room that worked out at about $120 USD per night. The hotel is located in a quiet part of Jakarta which was nice, but not too far in a taxi to get to the main tourist and nightlife areas.

Our apartment was huge, with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (1 en-suite), plus a large kitchen, dining and lounge area. The hotel contains a large pool as well which is great for relaxing in during the day, and there is a fitness centre.

As the hotel contains apartments, it seems that some families live there in serviced apartments (an expat crowd), but this was fine and there were no issues.

The staff were friendly and happy to help at all times. The food was basic, but nice enough. It was good for a lunch perhaps, but if you want a delicious dinner then find a good restaurant elsewhere.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Somerset Berlian and would stay here again.

This property is located in a residential area, and quite right inside, so that taxi drivers do not know its exact location. Had to mention “Permata Hijau” or “Carrefour Permata Hijau” for the cabdriver to bring me to this area, then direct him amidst the heavy traffic and across the road to the inside small lane.

The layout of the lobby was average, nothing opulent or having that luxurious feel. I booked a 2-bdrm apt, but upon check-in, was “upgraded” to a 3-bdrm apt. To say the least, and not to be too critical, “average” is what sums up this apt. The property is supposed to be about 4 yrs old according to reception but the corridors to my apt on 23rd floor were dark, warm and looking dated, and so was my apt – it’s already showing its age with paint peeling off the wall in the living room. The sofa set was covered in stained fabric. The kitchen knives were not sharpened. The washing machine was located in a separate backroom with the aircon unit condensers which made the whole room unbearably hot and stuffy, so using the washing machine was out of the question. There were no welcome kits unlike other serviced apts (eg tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits – some apts even provided creamers and fruits). The curtains in the living room and bedrooms had part of their hooks off the railings, and these looked unsightly, so I dutifully took time to hook them up again (a clear case of the cleaning maids failing in their duty). The bed? well as you’ve guessed it, just average, not luxurious. And the pillows – the worst I’ve seen. All of them including those in the other bdrms had microfibers coming out (yucks!!!), so I had to cover the pillow I slept with a bath towel each night. Broadband internet is complimentary – a plus – but the usb socket is located at the dressing table in the master bdrm – a minus point, considering that I do my surfing mainly in the living room. Somerset was kind enough though, to get a technician to install a wifi modem in the bdrm, so that I can have wireless internet access within the apt.

I was overwhelmed by the number of guests having breakfast each morning. Regardless of the time I visited the café for breakfast, it was always full – early morning (7:15am) with those in office attires, later (9am) with those in casual T-shirts and flip-flops. The problem is that the café is too small, and milling around the area picking your food in buffet style simply means having to wait your turn esp at the bread counter/toasting machine and the omelette station. My observation is that the guests are mainly from China, middle east and south asia – the latter two mainly comprising families with children running about.

The gym was on the smallish side, and considering the number of residents in the two towers, I did not venture to use it at all.

Given the location, apt/building condition and clientele, I’m sorry to say that I would not be able to recommend this serviced apt to my friends and colleagues.

Room Tip: Inquire if they have rooms that have been re-furbished. Having a dated 3-bdrm apt doesn't help m...

Booked this hotel through a friend's recommendation. Got a really good price through agoda for the 3 bedroom apartment. The service was good. Fast check-in even though we arrived close to 2am . Close to the major shopping area. Breakfast was just ok. Not much selection but enough to start the day. The best part is that the hotel area is quiet which is good to avoid the crowded city .

Somerset Berlian Jakarta was a brilliant experience for us as a family of 4. Upon check in, we were pleasantly surprised with an instant upgrade to a 3 bedroom Deluxe from a 2 Bedroom Exec which we thought was a very generous gesture on behalf of the management.
Reception staff were always friendly, efficient and courteous.

The Reception and Lobby area had a modern fit out, impecabbly clean, spacious, brightly lit and well-organised. But what truly stood out were the hotel staff who were the epitome of Indonesian hospitality and warmth.

At 130sqm or 1,391 sq ft, the 3 bedroom was indeed spacious. Rooms were very tidy and well furnished. Layout was well thought out, with a spacious kitchen well stocked with cutlery and dinnerware.

There was also a private laundry room with a washing machine /dryer and a generous sized maid's room (if you decide to bring along helper) which were hidden away from the main area.

This apartment contained the usual amenities such as Cable TV, fast cable broadband, LCD TV, well-lit rooms, quiet, big swimming pool, tennis court, good range of gym equipment, to the built-in oven, children's playground, outdoor gym and secured entrance

On our second day, the air-conditioning in the master bedroom wasn't responding to the remote control. We called up the concierge, and received almost immediate response with 3 engineers rectifying the problem. It was fixed in less than 15 min.

We ventured out on foot (a slow 10min walk) to a nearby mall where we found Carrefour and Guardian pharmacy and a mish mash of other local stores selling a variety of items.

We have few issues with the stay as a whole, but areas of improvement would be the selection and quality of the breakfast buffet, and the painfully tasteless coffee. If only they'd provided authentic strong indonesian coffee, then that would've been a perfect stay. Also, the dishes in the apartment and the restaurant need to be cleaned more thoroughly as we spied bits of dried food stuck on the plates and cutlery which was a little gross.

We will definitely be back and highly recommend this place as a home away from home.

Room Tip: With only couple of extra dollars, I'd recommend the Executive 2 bedroom if you are travelling w...

I have been a regular short and long stay visitor at the Somerset Berlian for about 4 years. It is always good value. the rooms are large and while the bathrooms aren't all that modern they are always clean and well stocked with amenities. Prices for rooms and all services are always better than reasonable. the wifi in the room is a hard connection and only in the bedroom and thats a pain. Its is however free and fast. There's an extremely cheap minimart in the basement and a big supermarket 5 minutes walk away. The kitchen in the room is unusually big as is the fridge so cooking for yourself is a great option.. On most deals
breakfast is included and its excellent. food from cafe is also good with tom yum and curries worth a mention. also worth remembering is that the Deluxe room is actually better than the more expensive Executive room. Its a bit smaller but the space you get in the "executive" is useless unless you plan to host a table tennis tournament. Its a serviced apartment/Hotel but very hard to really tell the difference.

We were looking for a place like home and this is it. 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom, kitchen, laundry room serviced apartment is obviously too big for 2 of us but the price is the same as a normal hotel room. I personally don't like the traffic in Jakarta and this place is a hideaway from the noisy part of this big city.

The breakfast is good, not great and the space is quite limited. The residents, mostly expat, are also using this facility and get a little crowded in the morning, sometimes look like a nursery with lots of babies and kids. The situation gets worse when there is a meeting/seminar in this hotel. So after a few days we have to adjust our breakfast hour to avoid these.

The swimming pool is great, big and clean. The staff is helpful and friendly. There is a mini mart at the underground floor where you can get drink and snack. Food is also good and not expensive with good choice of international and local.

Even though they don't have the full hotel amenities but the overall atmosphere made us forget about those add-on. We will definitely book it again, private or business.

We booked a 2 bedroom apartment at this hotel. Being former JKT residents we knew we wanted to stay in the southern part of Jakarta close to friends, malls and our favorite restaurants. The hotel is in a great location in a quiet part of the more up market Residential south JKT. it is easy to get to from the airport, and easy access to a variety of malls: Plaza Senayan, Senayan City, Pondok Indah ! & 2, Pacific Place and Gandaria Mall. Also easy to get to the CBD from here. We booked a 2 bedroom but got upgraded to a 3 bedroom Lots of space with adequate kitchen and dining room facilities. Master bedroom had an en-suite bath/shower and a second bathroom for the other two bedrooms to share. The hotel staff were extremely helpful, patient and understanding not to mention very friendly. The complimentary breakfast was adequate and we got free wi-fi too. We would definitely stay again as it is great value for money.
My only peeve is that the bathrooms are not as clean as my OCD self would like. The corners were so obviously missed. I have dirty corners. The cleaners need to use their hands and a cloth. You can't mop corner dirt. UGH!!!

Room Tip: This hotel has no issues with noisy streets or noisy construction so, don't think one needs to a...
