“Not bad at all!”
Reviewed August 11, 2010

Stayed here en route to Bali. The hotel is in the older part of Jakarta, so not the place for someone who wants the glitzy malls of Jakarta on their doorstep. Check in was smooth and fast and we were upgraded to the Premier room on the 7th floor with a city view. Lifts were fast, spacious and ample. Room was well appointed, clean and cozy. Bed was very comfortable, TV was big (although not LCD), comfortable lounging sofa, separate bath and shower. Security on the ground and floors and all around the hotel vicinity was fantastic. Staff all over was really helpful. Pool was huuuugeeeee!!!! Breakfast buffet was fantastic with umpteen choices. My room was close to the elevators so not much of a walk.
Some problems though: Safe in my room was not bolted, so anybody could walk out with it!!! Wooden flooring and bathroom fittings are showing wear and tear. Internet is charged (around 10USD for 24 hours) There was a water leak in the room above which was seeping into my room, so housekeeping kept a small towel underneath it...?!?!?!
However, for the rate I got online (around USD65), it was a fantastic bargain!! There are shopping centers (not malls) around the hotel and a 24 hour coffee shop Ooh La La with free wi fi and decent food right behind. A drive to the city center will take 30-40 minutes and cost around 40,000 Rupiah.
One advice to first time travelers...Jakarta does not favor the US $ very much and notes which are folded, creased, have stamps or pin marks or belong to the pre 2000 series are seldom accepted. So please be careful when selecting the currency you take to Indonesia, because even airport money changers and some hotels refuse to accept them. Other than that, Jakarta is a nice enough place and I feel bad that i was unable to give the city a proper chance!

Novotel Mangga Dua is a very nice hotel situated above 3 floors of not exactly a shopping mall but small shops of same sizes inside a building. Hotel starts on the 5th floor. Check in was ok. We were upgraded to a premium room due maybe because we're A|Club member, stayed only for a night due this is only a stopover, would have love to stay for a few more days in the upgraded room which is big and view from window is good. Breakfast is good, but like other Novotel (Accor) chains of hotel, no free wi-fi, price is out of this world where almost all hotel we stayed in comes with free wi-fi. Anyway, you can have free wi-fi at Ooh La La which is on the corner of this building and is open 24 hours for coffee, breakfast and some sandwiches.

Jakarta's traffic makes the choice of hotel crucial if time is essential. The Novotel Manggadua, next to a shopping centre and various restaurants (a door in the lobby leads directly to the shopping centre), is located adjacent to one of Jakarta's main North-South routes, and also close to the airport motorway. Rooms are arranged around a fairly large pool (for an inner-city hotel), and there is space for medium-size conferences and receptions. Breakfast is opulent Novotel style, but the reception area could be more comfortable, particularly if you are waiting for your driver who is stuck in traffic ...

The hotel itself is quite nice. The "ostentatious me" likes a lobby but there is none really. The rooms are pretty good with plenty of space. Shopping centre down stairs is pretty good with plenty of food options as well as a carrefoure dept/grocery store which is handy. F&B is pretty good as well but the room service was a bit average.

We enjoyed our stay at the hotel as well as in Jakarta. Had a great little tour to the old harbour by ourselves. We just went by taxi and one of the locals showed us around and took us on one of the scooners. We then went to the old town and to batavia and Fatahilla square which was really good (especially as it was just us, not on a tour - if you wing it....it usually works out)

All in all. the hotel was good but had a bit of a funny feeling about it. The pool people were "assuming" we were going to steal the towels, "did you have anything from the mini bar"? "no" I don't believe you, I'll check anyway......whatever !

We weren't unhappy but not really sold on it

was at the hotel specifically for trips to Mangga Dua malls. Excellent place to stay if one's trip is for shopping. The hotel is in the same building Mangga Dua square. Entrance to hotel is on the ground floor next to the shopping mall, with the reception and check in and go up to 5th floor for the main lobby, pool and cafes.
The room is quite large (executive room) same as the bathroom but unfortunately the shower is weak.... well its nice to have a steady fast flow of water raining on you after a humid day walking around Mangga dua.

I wasn't expecting much from a Novotel as I thought these hotels were lower end of the market. We stayed on the exec floor, and the rooms were quite good. The only problem was that the curtains were hard to move into position to completely black out the light. Room service was good, and the staff friendly. All in all, recommended.
