I visited this place on a hot summer day. It was a fair bit of a walk from the gate to the actual tower itself, i.e. about 15-20 minutes. Then you have to line up to get to the viewing deck as there is a queue. Nothing spectacular except that you know this monument stands as a symbol of independence for the Indonesians. It is also in this place where I bought some souvenir fridge magnets. I can't seem to find any at the cheap stalls in the other markers or in Mangga Dua Square.

On the 2 Saturdays that we were in Jakarta there was a night market by the monument ( may happen on other days - I don't know) . Whole families seemed to congregate there in the evening to give it a very nice friendly atmosphere. Children playing , kites flying , food and drink available.

Guess what people was called this tower as a nickname? The Diorama section in the base floor have emerging Indonesian history and impressive stories on how the country was built. The mediation hall displays an authentic copy of the declaration of country's independence read by the Soekarno upon Indonesia's independence from the aggression of colonialism for centuries. Soekarno wants this monument to memorize the struggle of Indonesian people that would last for many generations. Unfortunately, it took 9 years to complete this tower which is 5 years after his death. Come to see the observation platform at the top level which we can view the surrounding Jakarta. You may see the beautiful gold foil at the top of the tower after dark. Walk surrounding to buy local t-shirt but be brave to bargain. Then step out to Gambir Station, walk to the great Istiglal Mosques or continue to the National Museum. Glad I am able to visit this tower as a young child and as an adult.

If you are in Jakarta for just a day - don't bother going up this monument. The queues are horrendous and you will waste a lot of time. It looks great from the ground - just stick at that.
