The monument can be seen from the main road. The entrance was dirty and stinky. The peddlers kept harassing us.

Being the National Monument, and with the magnificent history of how the gold got onto the flame of the monument, this is a must stop at place if you are sightseeing in Jakarta. The park within which it sits is pleasant and green, a respite from the crowds and traffic swollen roads in Jakarta. Here you will see horses and carts which domestic tourists just love to ride. The monument itself relies on two things: a view, which is spectacular, they say, we were unable to access it the day we went ?renovations; and, a Diorama in the base. The Diorama as a means of accessing information is not so popular any longer in the Western mind. Dioramas are a great strategy when you are dealing with non-literate populations and you want them to grasp a lot of complex ideas. The Mexicans understood this really well when they adopted a lot of "cartooning" in their public education and information strategies. Still, it tells a story through Indonesian eyes. The problem is that this display has become quite old and tacky. It probably could do with a spruce up and a rethink? The information is important to know. The reason to go here is for its historical significance. You are not likely to have an epiphany experience here, but, be sure to take you camera and a bottle of water.

If you do go and visit MONAS, you have to go up to the top and see the view. If you are more interested in the historical data, on the ground floor they explain the indonesian history. This is one of the more famous tourism destination that should be covered in your jakarta tour. The surrounding is ok, but a bit dirty.

We were there at late afternoon 13 Dec 2013. They are renovating the grass around the tower. Very relax place and peaceful considering the traffic jam around Jakarta.
I think this is one of the must visit place while we are in Jakarta.

Went here in the evening by public bus to experience the local weekend crowd. The tower itself is nothing much to admire, but the surrounding atmosphere is a good introduction to Jakarta and its people.
