we were suppose to visit the monument on Sunday morning and decided to postponed till let afternoon due to the weekly parade from early morning till 11am as informed by our driver. Went there around 5pm, and was still pretty crowded and lively where some of the indonesian has picnic, selling stuff and others.

But the saddest thing, the area inside was littered though the dustbin provided at strategic position, otherwise it is a beautiful monument and garden..

Probably one of the first stops for most tourists in Jakarta, I found it to be very lackluster. The surrounding gardens are not that well-maintained and the views on top were nothing to shout about. Skip the queues for going in and just take a picture from far. The wait is not worth it.

The MONAS was worth visiting, but we didnt' get there early enough, and faced with a 2 hour wait to go up to the top in 35 degree heat, decided discretion was the better part of valour. That said, the museum underneath the monument was fairly informative (if decidedly slanted in it's narrative) and the huge underground space was a wonderfully cool. The surrounding area was great for a snapshot of Indonesian life.

Great 360 degree views of the whole city from the top. The dioramas in the basement provide a good introduction to Indonesian history. You must enter the monument via an underpass - look out for it or you will just keep walking around and around it. Park lands surround MONAS - so don't expect to be dropped at the entrance to the monument - you will get droped at a gate and then need to walk. And make sure you know which gate you came in.
