“Interesting history and good view”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Nice gardens outside and a museum at the base with interesting little dioramas about Indonesia's history. 5000Rp entrance to the museum area and an extra 10000Rp to get to the top and check out the view. It is a little deceptive that the line is not visible until one has already paid and turned a corner. There is one lift only that accommodates 10 people and it took quite a long wait to get to the top. A bit crowded of course like everything in Jakarta but an interesting view of the city.

“Great place for photos”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

I enjoyed to going to the monument because its a very famous and historical place in Indonesia. Its especially a great place to take great photos of the Monas from below and the city from the top of the Monument. There are many street food vendors and merchants selling inexpensive souvenirs. The only thing I didn't like was the traffic getting there but what can you expect in the capital of Jakarta.

“Views over Jakarta”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

A little confusing to get to the top... the entrance is away from the centre of the Monas area. Very windy at the top, but great views of Jakarta.

“Must see”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

A must see on your visit to Jakarta. No need to go up or in.
Budget about 2 hours to see it and the Grand Mosque.

“Get There Early”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

We were actually heading to the nearby park and not the monument, but as we arrived on New Years Day, the previous night's celebratory cleanup and rubbish collection (with appropriate smells from rotting in the tropical heat) was in full swing. So we thought we would try MONAS. I was actually quite surprised entering MONAS (cost Rp5000) via a clean, underground tunnel to the base, which opens out to a HUGE underground room, with Indonesian history retold in dioramas. Up some steps to pay the fee to get the lift to the top of MONAS (Rp10 000). For free, you can go outside at this level and avoid the queuing to get to the top. At least the queue was in shade. We were the only "bule" in the line and seemed to be of some amusement to the people waiting? However, as I can speak Bahasa Indonesia (sedikit!) interaction with the visitors while we waited was actually enjoyable! After all the wait (recommend if you are going get there at opening time as when we left the line was really long) we enjoyed the views afforded from the top for about 15 minutes....where you had to wait again for the lift down. Seeing as this monument is symbolic of Jakarta, I am glad I went. Worth a visit, but like I said, go early!
BTW we did go for a bit of a walk through the nearby park as we left. Cool in the shade.
