All locals would likely feel really in touch with their history if they saw this. The down side is that in this kind of climate most of the things inside will deteriorate in a couple decades as it is in a nice old building that has no AC. Even the new part which has AC is exposed by virtue of being connected by open passageways.
I loved the old map from the 1930s. I hope that the nation will preserve its belongings. Be sure to see the golden treasures on the top floor of the new building!

With only IDR 5,000 admision, the museum was quite ok. It consist of collection mostly from the prehistoric, early historic, to maybe about the 18th century. It also have collection of Indonesian cultural heritage.
I think what the museum is lack of the most is the history of why Indonesia is the country it is now. For a 'national' museum, it should capture more about how Indonesia from prehistoric era can evolved to the diverse country it is now in the modern society.
Instead, it is now just a building with collection spread out everywhere. With the old building and the new building not integrated well enough, it is even more confusing for visitor to understand about what Indonesia is.
Even the highlight of the place, which I think is the cultural wing, is only a dimly lit room with collection inside a uniform wooden display without any particular theme to embrace the diversity of Indonesia.
The guide which we use is a very kind man, but deep down you know he is resourceful because he's been doing this for years. I think you can see clearly that the museum have a lack of concern in training and update the knowledge of their employee.
All in all, if you have an extra IDR 5,000 and a free couples of hours, yes, do came. Especially if you came only to Jakarta on your visit to Indonesia. I think the cultural wing will make you even curious of what the country have. Ask for a guide, request to skip the gold and ceramic area. Gave them a nice tip, they could use it to buy some more book about Indonesia history and culture.

This museum has a lot to offer if you can read miniscule typed signage in Indonesian and occasional English at knee level. There are some wonderful exhibits of artifacts, but without the right signage and the lack of air-conditioning the experience was a disaster for us.

Talking about Museum Gajah or National Museum is exploring almost the history of Indonesia from pre historic to 18th century collection. My 1st visit was 15 years ago, and this is my 3rd visit with the new building in the right wing. I heard they would expand with the back wing for many antiques Indonesian collection. The new building was equipped with modern display that showed many ethnic collections. We must spend here with minimum visit 1-2 hours, 3 hours is an ideal visit to learn the whole collection of this museum. You can see Indonesian gold jewelries from ancient kingdoms on the 2nd floor with high-security. You will be amazed with the collection. One of the best collections are from Hindu historic, a 3,5 meter statue that describe the God of Shiva.
