“Old world charm if you have plenty of time”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2014

The museum is quaint. The old building adds to the old world charm of the place. A bit difficult to locate. The museum is rather small, and isn't very well staffed either. You could miss out a section of the first floor near the reception because there are no directions on where to go. However, I enjoyed the old maritime relics and the models of sailboats. If you are not interested in history and ships, you could well give this place a miss, but I would recommend it to those who like to keep away from touristy attractions.

“Well maintained, nice place to go”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2014

It is located not far from Jembatan Kota Intan in Jakarta, across the VOC shipyard and next to the Sunda Kelapa Fish Market. You can go there on foot if you are visiting the old town (old Batavia) in Jakarta.
It is also located near De Rivier hotel.

To be honest, it is one of a few museum which is well maintained in Indonesia.
The museum is clean, although some spot of the museum is a bit dusty.
Most of the museum area is not air conditioned, so be prepared to sweat.
It has a lot of real and miniature ship inside, giving all the details of maritime history in Indonesia.
The museum also has a front desk with English speaking officer. The museum also provide a guide.
It is also completed with a showroom, showing all kind of Indonesia foreign visitor and their relationship in the past. We are forbidden to take picture inside though, the alarm will go nuts if you do (I've seen someone try to take a picture).

However, it only has limited parking lot.

It is one of the place worth visited in Jakarta, especially if you love history.

When you visit this place, make sure you use guide. And the you will understand the great story behind the wall. This museum is well maintenance. Its hard to find the direction, but better you asked people on the street to find this museum.

“amazing educational experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2013

I highly recommend anyone even mildly interested in Maritime history to visit this museum. But really, its a highly informative exhibition outlining the rich history of maritime interactions in Jakarta from the first spice traders to the recently expanded multi million dollar port. With umpteen models of ships on display and some mildly freaky mannequins providing an insight into previous explorers, merchants and colonists, I highly recommend a visit, if no reason other than it only cost 50cents!!
