Owner description: The Chinatown of Jakarta began long before Indonesia existed as a nation and was originally the Chinatown of Batavia. This was the area where the Dutch required the Chinese to live. Today, the whole area is called Glodok and includes traditional houses, markets, architecture and some very beautiful Chinese temples; the Da Shi Miao and the Vihara Dharma Bhakti temples are both popular tourist attractions. The Glodok Market is one of the great commercial centers of Jakarta where you can buy everything from antiques to laptops.

“no need to go”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2013

it was long2 time ago that you should go there for cheap electronics, home appliances, IT & gadgets. You could get them now with good price in shopping centers & mall with descent air conditioning anywhere in Jakarta. Sometimes you had think of product A with price of 1000, you go there hoping get price 750-800, but later you come home with product B of price 600 while costs you 850! Unless you are looking of old type starting to discontinued products, and you have known all other compares including prices, don't go there.

“Chinatown in Jakarta”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2013 via mobile

One of the largest "Chinatowns" in the world. Simply fascinating long after the mean-spirited riots against its residents in 1998 and the massacre of 5000 of its people in 1740. Visits to the Buddhist temples there are a must...the monks so welcoming and delighted to have you there. So much color, variety and happy families living next to open sewers. Highly recommended!

“Does”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2013

I visited Glodok over a Sunday in June 2013. Most of the activity seems to be centred around Jl. Pancoran next to Pasar Glodok. Despite the inclement weather, it was still very much active on a Sunday evening, with numerous street vendors and a little alley market that seemed to be selling food. There were a lot of shops where its Chinese owned ethnicity was clear; words written in Chinese and catering to many Indonesian Chinese customers. This Chinatown doesn't look like other stereotypical Chinatowns in other cities; no neon signs, not much red or giant Chinese symbols or characters around. There're some small streets off the main road which could interest you, but the general character of this place is pretty run-down.
