“Unfortunately service, cleaningness go south..”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2013 via mobile

I stay often in the Shangrila but somehow since 1 year I get the feeling the service is worse and less personal than before. Pity for such a great please. Also rooms could need an upgrade urgently. Rosso is still excellent choice for lunch menue.

We stayed at the Shangri La Jakarta from 22 Dec 2012 to 26 Dec 2012 and again from 3 Jan 2013 to 5 Jan 2013.
The service we received from absolutely outstanding. From the moment we arrived until our departure we were treated like royalty. The staff could not do enough for us. Mayo is an absolutely brilliant manager and saw to it that we were well taken care of.
We booked a suite and were upgraded to a one bedroom suite. It really is worth paying the extra for a suite. It’s also worthwhile book Executive Club rooms as you get access to the Executive Club. Complimentary breakfast was nice and so was afternoon tea.
The hotel itself is beautiful with lovely grounds and pools. The spa was top notch (and reasonable) and so was the gym.
The Kids Club had activities for kids on Saturday, horse rides, jumping castle and petting animals.
The hotel is well located with some of the top restaurants in Jakarta. It is located a few hundred metres from the Grand Indonesia Mall, one of the best malls I have visited (free transfer from hotel on weekends). Don’t forget to visit the Seibu department store in the Mall. It is also not too far from most attractions (MONAS, National Museum and Grand Mosque) as well as Mini Indonesia but it is a bit of a distance from Ancol and the Marina.
I highly recommend Ancol and the Grand Mosque. Mini Indonesia was a massive disappointment as it is not at all well maintained. They should give it to Disney to manage. Ancol is lovely for kids with the right mix of rides for younger and older kids. A smaller Disney with a great mix of rides and the perfect sized park. Another great attraction is Kidzania where kids between 6 and 12 get to try out different professions in a mini town. My daughter loved it.
I highly recommend using the airport transfer provided by the hotel. We used the service four times and every time without a glitch.
For in city travel, use Blue Bird taxi. They are more reasonable than Silver Bird.
The only downside is that the hotel is showing its age, it is after all 20 years old, but management have said that renovations commence next year. Staff do try and keep it top notch and it is very clean.
From a value for money perspective, this has got to be the best hotel group in the world (we have stayed at a number of their hotels).
But the biggest thank you and complement goes to Kafi and Iki at concierge, probably the best concierge in the world. I was in the Gili Islands and needed to change flights. Kafi took care of it for me from Jakarta. Without him knowing this resulted in me staying another 2 nights at the Shangri La Jakarta. My daughter forgot her goggles and swimming cap at the hotel. Iki saw to it that we got them!
A big thank you to the team at Shangri La Jakarta. You made our stay over-memorable and we hope to return soon!

Room Tip: Book the suite or the one bedroom suite, you won't be sorry. At a minimum, the executive club r...

We (my husband, I and two young children age 4 and 1) stayed in Shangrila for one night on December 22, 2012. The last time I stayed in Shangrila was in 2006.

Jakarta had torrential rain and flooding at certain area at the time, so after checking in, we stayed in the hotel. Shangrila was supposed to hold kids activities in the garden, however due to the rain and wind, it was cancelled. Our daughter was disappointed, but it's totally understandable. Shangrila moved the kids play area indoor the next day and the pool was closed for the day. Our daughter had a great time with the kids activities.

Our first impression with the lobby and common area was great - everything looked "grand" and decorated for Christmas.
The service was mostly ok, however I feel the busboy could use some training in customer service. We weren't aware that the elevators had been updated with key card access - the busboy didn't take his time explaining, he pretty much just took the card from my hand and inserted it.
Our biggest disappointment is the room - it feels dated and hasn't been updated much (if at all) since our stay in 2006. I am not even sure the color of the hairdryer - was it white, cream, or light yellow?? It's a minor thing but to us, it shows how dated the room is.
Dinner and breakfast at Satoo was great - we loved the food selection and service was good (breakfast was included in our room package, dinner was $33 per person).

There are many 5* Hotels in Jakarta but the Shang has it all.

Location with respect to Traffic can be a problem but otherwise it is a great place to stay whether for business or pleasure.

Finally, of it is good enough for President Obama and other dignitaries they must be doing something right.

This is a good value for money 4/5 star hotel. Service was helpful and friendly. Concierge was particularly good.

However, the prices for food and beverages were somewhat high eg USD12 for a local beer at the bar. This was particularly high given that the barmen had a trick of taking forever to return change ie they were hoping we'd just leave the change as a tip.

The breakfast was USD23 for a pretty ordinary buffet.

The pool and gardens are very nice.

But the biggest surprise was USD8 for a cup of filter coffee, a small glass of water and two tiny biscuits.

compared to other 5 stars this hotel simply doesn't provide the service expected, waiters are terribly unprofessional (at dinner and breakfast), the room is rather worn out with stains and not clean nor attractive, personal attention not always good- food is definitely not terrific- a very poor price quality deal, despite the impressive entrance

Room Tip: try asking for the renovated ones slightly better-

Ive been going to this hotel ever since it first opened some 2 decades ago. Throughout the years, the hotel indeed aged, but the impressions I got still remains. The hotel still exudes the same air of grandeur and opulence that made it one of the most luxurious hotel in jakarta back in the early 90s, and yet with a humble hospitality thats very Shangri-la to the core. Despite the old carpets in the room, stained marbles, slightly dusty corridors, I still find Shangri-la jakarta as one of the best options for business or leisure.

Great gym and spa, but pool needs a bit renovation. Excellent breakfast selection at SATO.
