“A pleasant oasis in the bustle of Jakarta”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2012

The Dharmawangsa offers exceptional service in a very pleasant, calm surrounding. Different from the other 5-star high rise hotels in Jakarta, The Dharmawangsa has only a few floors in a colonial setting. Lot's of wood and local art in the public places. Huge guestrooms, to the point that the flatscreen TV has almost too small a diagonal to be watched from the bed at the other end of the room. The bathroom is very big with separate shower, bathtub, toilet and two sinks. The bed is very comfortable. We arrived late after a long flight and although the pretty and large outside pool officially closes at dawn, they "opened" it again for us. Great gym, too. All around a great place for business or pleasure.

Had 1 full day meeting in this hotel. This hotel occupies a very big area in Kemang and the external facade is nice and well maintained. A pity that the hotel name is not clearly indicated on the gates. Internal decoration is very traditional and feel warm. Good service from the staffs during the day meeting. Food quality is good but not exceptional.

For those who fond of James Bond films, there is a long list of Martini selections named after James Bond's movie titles, names used in Bond's movies, and everything about James Bond, in the Dharmawangsa hotel's lounge. Those variety of Martinis are so great at the lounging/ cocktail hours. It is IDR 155,000 ++; but worth, as the Dharmawangsa hotel is a gorgeous place, the decorations and the crowds are great and beautiful. So exciting, really.

Although, one time I was there savoring the martinis, on the 19 Aug 12, Sunday, 5 to 6pm;
I got my martini glass, served with a trace of someone else' waterproof lipstick, that was not being cleansed up properly :(

(I didn't complain that afternoon since that is the 1st day of Ied Mubarak holiday, I didn't want to ruin the feeling of the staffs who are on duty that afternoon;
I did really think they did so much extra miles by happily attending their duty on the 1st day of nation's big holiday,
I could understand they might be feeling they wanted to be at home celebrating the big day with the relatives :)
and I don't want to disturb the happiness of the companies I was being with)

I hope this would never happen again to other customers. Take care.

Cheers!

I have checked out a number of Jakarta hotels this year. This one is the best - closely followed by Hotel Mulia. Peaceful, well run, great staff, good food. . It is close enough to the centre of the city to get in reasonalbly quickly (traffic is awful though) - but has the feel of being out of the teeming madness. Large rooms - and gardens, and a great outdoor pool.

This is probably my favorite hotel of all, in over 30 countries i have been to. I love the look, the peace and relaxed atmosphere that i come back to after a busy day of meetings. I could stay here a month! The beautiful balinese / javanese design is great! I would chnage one thing though - toiletries, specifically soap, shampoo and lotion. They don't fit the look and feel, and smell of the entire hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool or garden.

This place must have looked absolutely fantastic a few years back...the service is great, the rooms very spacious with high celings and nice design, breakfast is good (though not outstanding), but it absolutely needs to be updated. Nothing major, just cosmtic improvements: painting, replacing cracked marble on the walls and floors, replacing furniture and carpets. the toilet was making noise and the faucets did not work properly. A pitty if they don't update this beautiful place.

Room Tip: Somehow i was booked in a suite (duplex) but it wasn't worth the extra cost.

I have been staying at the Dharmawangsa for many years and I have never been disappointed (well maybe that the rates keep getting higher and higher each year) I often travel to Indonesia on business, something that most of my American friends and colleagues do not really like so much, but I like it here--so much so--that I try to work out my trip schedule so I can spend the weekend in Jakarta.

A weekend at the hotel usually means some time at the pool, tennis with the on staff hitting partner, some time at the spa and some shopping at Plaza Senayan. It is really so relaxing.

The hotel used to be managed by rosewood. After the contract expired, it is now managed by a local group. There might have been a slight drop in quality, after all, Rosewood manages some of the best hotels in the world--some of which I have been fortunate to stay at and are still memorable after many years. But I have to say, that the Dharmawangsa is still tops in Jakarta.

The rooms are very large and nice. Even after so many visits, I still look forward to arriving in my room to the scent of fresh jasmine flowers and the traditional Indonesian music playing. Every one of my special requests for the room over the years is kept on file and upon checking in, the room is perfectly setup with every special item perfectly in place. It feels like home.

Food is very good, breakfast is included in the room rate, but everything I have ever ordered at the hotel was very delicious.

The spa is amazing. For the price, it is the best value in the world. The massages are just amazing--I get so relaxed that I always fall into a deep sleep and often drool on the pillow from being totally relaxed.

The pool area is resort like--amazing for a hotel in the middle of a large city like Jakarta. I love to lie at the pool, swim and get drinks there. Fitness club is very good as well and the tennis hitting partner I have seen there over the years is an amazing player and we have had some good battles.

Can not wait until my next trip!
