“Nice hotel, nice location but rather overpriced”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2011

My husband and i booked the junior suite and as we arrived they offered us these fresh welcome drinks. The check-in process was smooth. The bed is comfy and they gave us generous amount of those big comfort pillows as well. The bath, the shower, the toilet were very clean. The food was too expensive. Better go to restaurants in the neighbourhood as this hotel is located in a famous Blok M area. But with everything they have and they offer, i think you can find another hotel nearby with cheaper price like in Kemang area.

The hotel reception does not understand the difference between cash and card payment. Want to swipe card and take cash. Internet is extremely expensive should be free at their rates. It advertises as 5 star but is not Towels and linen are old and frayed. bathroom has shower over the bath. The room is tired needs refurbishment. At least the hot water is hot. The breakfast whilst good is not able to be charged to the room you must pay on the spot. The rate is different if you have room only the rate is 70% dearer than if you include in your room rate. The general staff are excellent but the management staff and reception are not up to it. I was charged more than the booking rate due to a mistake in the currency of the booking. Why in Indonesia would you pay in other than their own currency if you use cash. I travel a lot in Indonesia and this is the worst experience I have had in a 5 star hotel - really a 4 star.

Room Tip: go elsewhere

Very nice 5-star hotel - not the friendliest, but a good, comfortable option if you can get a cheap rate. Room service food was surprisingly delicious.

Location is near Blok M, which is not near the "sights" - but if you are traveling for leisure, maybe best to skip those places, and just enjoy that good room service...

Jakarta boasts a great range of hotels of all prices and standards, so plenty of choice. This includes those in the Blok M area where there is great shopping, eating and entertainment. The Gran Mahakam is convenient to Blok M Plaza, and to the Damri bus station if using that service from the airport, tho' the area is also well known to taxi drivers and there are always plenty about day and night near the hotel. It presents well, in an elegant Victorian style, complete with heavy drapes and furnishings of the era, in whites and modest florals. Online a double room of modest proportions is around Rp1M, so not cheap compared to others in the area. Internet is extra and again expensive for the area.

Desk service is excellent and the staff as in most Jakarta hotels friendly. My room air conditioner was not working properly and housekeeping arrived promptly, but instead of moving me to another room, I had lads up a ladder fiddling with it at 11pm! The dining room closes at 10am - very early by Jakarta standards! It does offer a comprehensive and delicious buffet or al la carte, and both very well prepared. It is expensive for Jakarta - a typical meal with one drink would not leave change out of Rp250k so you are better to go out, particularly to the Kemang area to eat. Strangely drinks and meals are cheaper on room service.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to use the gym, which despite being assured it would be open at 6am, was not available even at 6:15, limiting its usefulness to those needing to fit in gym, breakfast and an early meeting in town.

Overall, I found it elegant but not my style, preferring a more utilitarian approach - clean modern lines - and at the price it is not the best value I have found in the area. But the food and service were generally good.

Gran Mahakam is very close to the Block M bus station. Fortunately, as the traffic in this area is insane and as a pedestrian you may have to wait for a lifetime to cross a street. If you arrive by bus from the airport look for a crossing with a hand-shaped statue and turn left. Ask the locals for directions, everyone knows this beautiful hotel.
The interior and the rooms are very classy, though I found it a bit inconvenient that the TV was hidden in a closet because you could only watch it sitting right in front of it. The bed was excellent.
The fitness room was alright but small, and there was always a receptionist or two sitting in the corner of the room which is not so nice if you are the only one exercising. I loved the pool on the rooftop, especially in the evenings when the plants around the pool decorated with lanterns looked very nice.
There are numerous restaurants around the hotel and at Block M mall but mostly Japanese/Chinese. Vegetarian dishes are not too widely offered in Jakarta. However, I can recommend Koi restaurant and their mouthwatering cheese soufflé, right next to the hotel. Close by there is Beauty House Helena where I got an excellent – though pricey – creambath.
Overall, Gran Mahakam is a pleasant option if you wish to stay in Block M.

The ambience was great but the room turned out to be too small to be comfortable. It also had an old and small CRT TV. Breakfast wasn't included and wasn't worth the USD100 a night rate.

When we booked it was purely based on the review listed below and its location. We were shoecked how pleasurable our stay was. Our room was lovely, bed was as comfy as my own at home with high ceillings and lovely decor, this is a place we will return to. Breakfast was great with a great variety day in day out. It feels like we were at home.
