Amaris Hotel Thamrin City
Ranked #169 of 471 Hotels in Jakarta
Reviewed January 30, 2013

Stayed for 2 nights, my brother selected this hotel because of proximity to eateries ground floor of building.
My background: done backpacking (sleeping rough) Europe for 1 month; gone to adventure travel in Egypt (2/3 stars hotels; done 3-5 stars hotels around the world (Cancun; Switzerland;Spain; France; Italy; Maldives; Far East; China).

Pros of this hotel:
Clean
Friendly and polite staff
Comfortable pillows and double bed
Strong air conditioning
Free wifi

Cons:
No wardrobe/anywhere to hang clothes
Small
No windows (one window that showed one of the corridors of the hotel; hence people can peek into your room! Nice!)
Smoking permitted so can smell smoke in corridors then into your room
Shower temperature variable
Location not so good (bad because taxis in Jakarta is unreliable)
No hair dryer
No kettle for hot water (tho they left 2 mugs in the room!)
No light snacks
No hangers
No gym/pool

Conclusion:
I would recommend this place if you are a solo traveller; who dont mind very basic comfort; in need of a place to stay for few hours (like check in midnight and checkout 5 am).

it's a good budget hotel with fantastic location. The hotel is about 3 minutes walking distance from Grand Indonesia and is above the Thamrin city mall. Its rather tricky to find the hotel first time as the lobby is at level 6 and is access by the dedicated lift. The towel provided need improvement.

Well, as a budget hotel, this hotel isnt that bad.
But that wont hurt to stop using stained pillow, right?
The room isnt that small, but the closet is too tiny! Barely keep any clothes in it.

What i love the most is the location. Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia is only minutes walking. Many restaurants and even batik shopping center.

With the price, the location, i say this hotel is pretty worth it.

Both times we stayed at the Amaris our nightly rate averaged around $40, inclusive of breakfast. It's right next door to the apartment building that my mother and sister live, so location was perfect for us. Need to mention as well that right across the street lays the most happening mall in Jakarta at the moment, The Grand Indonesia. Thamrin City itself offers shopping, though more of a market-style instead of a mall.

The room offers a decent size if you're there for a stopover, just passing through the city, or if you're going to be at work all day. Smart hotel setup involves bed, flat screen TV on the wall, a narrow-but-convenient nook on one side of the wall to hang your clothes, safety deposit, two shelves on the sides of the bed which serve as nightstands. Bathroom amenities include shower gel and shampoo & conditioner installed on the shower wall, towels of course, toothbrush/paste, and two tumblers. Two bottled mineral water welcome you every day and a water dispenser with hot and cold tabs sits just around the corner at the end of the hallway.

Our room offered the view of the street, which is considered an upgrade at this place.

Breakfast offers Indonesian home-cooked affair: "bubur ayam" (chicken & rice porridge) with its trimmings ("cakweh", scallions, crispy shallots, etc.), coffee, juice, toast with jam and peanut butter, and on the opposite side of the buffet sits an omelet/fried egg station with two chefs constantly working. Not necessary to place an order because plates of omelets and sunny-side ups are laid out for the taking. Be sure to pick one that's newly cooked and hot.

Dining options downstairs on the first floor, outside of the building, offer a few modern Indonesian delights such as Bakmi GM (very delectable noodle soups), Tekko (delicious ribs), and Kopi Tiam (Dutch-Chinese fusion) with Soto Ambengan (traditional Indonesian chicken soup). But Grand Indonesia is less than a 5-minute walk anyway if you want more variety.

The main big drawback for us: stench of cigarette smoke thickly lingers *everywhere*. Our room reeked of cigarette smoke both times and when I contemplated moving to a different room, I realized the entire hotel reeked of smoke, though perhaps not as noticeable in the lobby/dining areas, so no need to find a room that didn't have a hint of smoke. The small window in the room opens, but not everyone has the decency to blow outside.

Another drawback is noise, from the hallway, sometimes from other rooms, and also from the hall down below by the restaurants. On weekend nights the shopping center hosts a band and what sounded like karaoke. We could hear the noise in our bedroom on the seventh floor. It does not last all night thankfully, but we were jetlagged and desperate for a good restful sleep around 5pm.

I recommend this hotel for quick stops and overnighters and those with a very tight budget. Honeymooners and first-time vacationers in Jakarta please consider the Kempinski across the street (ballpark $200/night).

this hotel is ok...small room but the location is good if you like to shopping...in other floor you will find big food court and then shopping mall for batik , shoes and furniture.

Breakfast very standard and sometimes the food finish , many staff are student from tourism school .

For budget hotel this is fine.
