“This is best hostel I have ever stayed at after traveling SEA for 5 month”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2012 via mobile

I have been traveling SEA for the last five months, and yes I have been to the new Hanoi Back Packers and it's my #2, but I would still give the golden goose to Six Degrees. Ian, David, Bobby, Watsi, and Lici the nicest people you will meet in Jakarta and they all know so much about the city and are always trying to make everyone feel at home.

The hostel itself has everything! A legit gym, an awesome mini theatre with almost every movie or TV show thinkable, a great upstairs bar, video games, great cheap food surrounding the place, very clean rooms and washrooms, and free wifi and computers. The list goes on. This was an amazing hostel in a not so amazing city! Everyone told me to get to Jakarta and then get out, but I'm so glad I stayed at Six Degrees for four days it was a blast! This is a hostel that doesn't need people to make it an amazing time. It already is!

At the moment we step into the hostel, the lady owner gave us a very good first impression! She was very friendly and helpful! The staffs were all very friendly too! One of the staff, Bob, played guitar and sang very well too! we even had a singing session with him! There were a lot of facilities like pool,Wii,a projector for movies, books, few laptops for you to surf the net, Wifi in the lobby and even rooms! And all of these are free of charge! Another add point is the main entrance can only be access using the key provided by the hostel, only hostel guest can open the main door. Yet, i found that the sound proofing system was not very good as we can clearly hear the steps if someone pass by the corridor. The bamboo bed created some noises if turned body when sleeping. Overall it was a good hostel!

First, I should say they care about the security. Front door can only be opened by guests who had a magnetic key. Securing the privacy for the guests who are staying here.

Once you get in the friendly host(s) will greet you. They will explain to you about some rules in this hostels and some tips about the city or places you can visit in the city.

Six degrees is actually a 3-4 (i forgot :p) store building, with some small and medium size rooms, suitable for backpackers or people who want to have a trip around the city. The furniture inside the rooms are very basic, a bamboo bed, reading lamp, and a bamboo drawer. The simplicity is compensated by a 24h broadband wifi, a home theatre, cleanliness, a very good decoration, informative and friendly hosts, and the great location of this hostel in the middle of the town.

SWIMMING POOL: aha... they don't have a swimming pool (5 minutes walking distance). but there's is a olympic sized swimming pool nearby. you have to pay entry pass to use it.

First floor: you got the reception desk, a small bar, home theater, a pool table, a tiny rack filled with books. there are laptops connected with the internet that can be used by the guests freely.

Second and third floors: the guests rooms.

Fourth floor: the roof top.

This is one important thing: shared bathroom. yep, i guessed there are only a few rooms which have a private bathroom, else the guests have to use shared bathroom. but the cleanliness is very good, and there are a lot of them to make sure you won't wait if you want to have it.

Weakness: if there's any weakness may be the wall that separate rooms. It's made by thin wooden plate, sometimes the noise from the adjacent rooms can sneak into your rooms. Btw, since I did not spend much time in the room, it was not a big deal for me.

Value for money: this place is GREAT. They don't only sell the rooms but they help you to enjoy your trip. :) Keep up the good job, guys.

Room Tip: All rooms in here are very basic rooms with bamboo beds (you can see in the pictures). This hostel i...

Who says hostels are for the young and roughing it? Six Degrees was a perfect place for us, and the three of us are long retired and like our creature comforts!

We stayed a few days in Jakarta before continuing on to a scuba/snorkel trip so we had more baggage than the average backpacker, yet our rooms (a single on the 3rd floor and a double on the 2nd) had plenty of space for us and our gear. The beds are comfy and the rooms are quiet, much quieter than I expected for a busy Jakarta street. It was an unexpected bonus to have lots of counter space to unpack necessaries for our stay. The air conditioning worked well. The shared toilet and shower facilities were clean and spacious. Bring your own shampoo and such for the shower.

Breakfast was great--juice, fresh fruit, tasty toast with marmalade and peanut butter. Coffee, tea, and drinking water are free 24/7; chilled soda and beer are available in the honor bar. Good restaurants of all nationalities are within an easy walk of the hostel; some of them deliver if the Jakarta traffic intimidates you. If you want to cook for yourself, there's a guest kitchen on the 4rd floor and a grocery store a few blocks away.

The four owners and their staff took great care of us. There was someone around 24/7 to chat or help with anything: finding a money changer, advising on what sights to see or where to shop for whatever you fancy, pointing you to the cuisine of your choice, calling you a taxi or telling you how to take public transport. Their web site had excellent info about the area and how to find the hostel, including instructions in Indonesian for your taxi driver when you arrive. The hostel itself has a small sign, but it's next door to the Texas Chicken fast food place, which has a huge sign. You seriously can't miss it.

The common area was outstanding! There are comfy sitting areas, tables for eating, a home theater with a great selection of movies and TV shows if you want to veg out. They provide free wireless access, with 2 computers if you don't bring your own. There's a good library of books, magazines, and local newspapers. The bulletin board has maps and local info. The rooftop garden has a shady bale (gazebo), lots of seating, fruiting and flowering potted plants, and an interesting view of the Cikini neighborhood. This would be a great place to stay if you're traveling by yourself because of the social opportunities.

Our favorite "creature comfort" at Six Degrees was Nemo, the resident tabby cat who hung out in the lounge and bar, frequently sleeping on the pool table. He was friendly and playful but not demanding. He did come to our room once to request a private audience, snoozed with my husband a while, then had fun chasing his tail among our luggage.

The Cikini neighborhood was a great place for our short stay. It's not a  touristy area but within easy reach of major attractions by cheap taxi or public transport. You can find both Indonesian staples and Western comforts. There's a local market under the Cikini train station that sells baskets of all kinds from the village of Cirebon, near Bandung, plus flowers and all manner of floral arrangement paraphernalia. The market is in operation from July through New Year's.

Six Degrees is by far the Best Hostel I stayed during my 6 month tour around the world. The owners are very friendly and very hospitable. The rooms are very clean and nicely decorated. If you ever go to Jakarta, please book a night in Six Degrees.

I stayed in a single room for a few nights while doing some business in Jakarta. The place was incredibly clean, had lovely staff and a great chill out area downstairs. The location in Menteng makes it really easy to get anywhere in Central Jakarta and walking distance from cafes and supermarkets. What else could you want really?

The proprietor is very helpful and friendly. She has created.a guest house with comfortable and stylish common spaces (DVD room, computers with Internet, rooftop lounge). Our room had en suite bathroom that was clean and well designed, though windowless. There are good food stalls across the street and a travel agent/money changer next door. It is close to cikini station but the neighborhood doesn't have a lot going on. It's a good alternative to Jaksa, though, if you want to avoid that area.
