This is the only restaurant we know of in Jakarta still serving dishes in traditional-colonial rijsttafel style, which is still a pleasant experience that doesn't grow tired. There was also a musician troupe singing from table to table during our visit on a Saturday night.

We've been to the restaurant the last 3 decades & it continues to exhume old-world Batavia charm, especially with original tiles in some rooms & furniture/building structure wood from ancient trees. The place has been upgraded to include air-conditioning & some revamp of the decor, since our last visit several years ago.

It's a nice place to go on a date, entertain guests or just go for a family meal. The food is not the tastiest Indonesian or European dishes in town but the overall experience is still worth a visit.

Look - you don't come here for cutting edge Indonesian food. You come to feel like you're in Dutch Batavia. The building is an old, high ceiling colonial house, filled with all kinds of Indonesian handicrafts - masks, fabric, everything. The best food is a traditional rijstaffel - lots and lots of small dishes served on a bed of rice (the "rice table"), each brought by a pretty Indonesian lady dressed in traditional Javanese clothes. They bang a gong, all of them line up, and it's quite a production.

Each individual dish is ok - there are other, better and more authentic restaurants. But that is not why you come here. You come for the theater of it, the great room, the interesting antiques and 21 pretty Indonesian ladies lining up to serve you.

They do serve western dishes - reportedly pretty good, but again, you can find better.

So go, have an overview of Indonesian cuisine, and see if you like it. If you do, dig deeper. If not, take a few pictures and soak it all in. I've never seen another place in Java like it.

You know you're entering a restaurant with a difference when the gong at the entrance announces your arrival. The old house is beautiful you feel transported back to a more elegant age, and there are so many interesting things to see that the food is almost secondary. Service can't be faulted, and the ritual of the serving of the rijsttafel is wonderful. Food is good and there's music in the background. This is the perfect place for a romantic dinner, a family celebration or a business meeting, all of which are to be seen regularly at Oasis. Highly recommended, this is like stepping back into another century.
