My locally based friend brought us to the Square and Cafe Batavia. I love the ambience and anything old with historical significance. We were too full to try the dim sum but I heard from my friend that is good. Besides, my husband and I are based in HK, why would we come to Cafe Batavia for dim sum?

Nevertheless, enjoy our photos of the Square and Cafe Batavia

We went here as it is the tourist place to go, mostly for the area around it. We stopped here to rest our weary feet and after all the walking we did it was well worth the relaxing environment. The decor is rather nice and there is an ambiance of stillness there. We only had drinks, which were slightly expensive for Indonesia, but still well within an American's budget.

This environment is the MAIN reason to come to this place, just to relax.

Having read the reviews that said the food was pretty average for the prices, my husband and I went just for a late-morning drink. We ordered a glass of Pimms, a glass of Iced Chocolate and Mint Cappacinno (both alcoholic), and two plates of dim sum (7 pieces). The bill came to around 220,000 rupiah, which included tax and the service charge.

We did notice that there was no security for the building, which is a little strange for Jakarta. Also, we were first chaperoned to the downstairs smoking area. We then asked for non-smoking, and were taken upstairs which has a much airier atmosphere.

The drinks and dim sum were great, service was quick and pleasant, the view sitting upstairs beside a window was nice, and the general atmosphere of the cafe was relaxed and classy. All in all, a nice excuse to visit the northern part of town.

Here's a reminder of colonialism as experienced by the governors rather than the governed. Many things about this place are false: the hundreds of photos of celebrated people surely don't represent its past clientele - the Dutch royal family of the past fifty years can't all have been there - but it's interesting none the less. Otherwise, the tropical colonial ambiance is maintained by the high ceilings with circling fans and the slatted shutters over the open (or non-existent) windows, and the dark-timbered walls and beams. Service was adequate but not outstanding, and the food can only be rated as ordinary - in fairness, this was after a week of Eastern culinary delights, and a visit earlier in the week would probably have elicited a better rating. Still, a place well worth a visit as one of the few reminders of Dutch colonial rule.
