“Fascinating Venue”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

Café Batavia is at the edge of a large plaza where people congregate and buskers play, great for people watching.
AS a group of 4 adults and 2 children we visited for lunch and had a most acceptable meal, the empty plates were a good sign. And the staff were most helpful.
On the downstairs wall and the staircase were many photos of the famous and infamous, the upstairs area had a great view from the balcony.
The upstairs bar was very grand. You could see the Dutch legacy in the building and décor style. I do believe the slightly faded charm is very appealing. Great atmosphere.
Would I visit again? Yes definitely, perhaps on a weekday when the plaza is not so crowded.

Batavia cafe is a beautiful place, nice atmosphere, the food is delicious and valueable

If you come to this place, u'll feel like back to old century because they have many photos

The place is so romantic, especially on saturday and sunday we can enjoy the live music. If you're a couple, this place is a right place for u to candle light dinner.

“Incredible venue, terrible service”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

The venue is gorgeous and made me feel i had gone back in time and I was in a south American country. As you enter there is a lovely light waiting area and inside the first floor is somewhat darker but atmospheric. You can smoke downstairs and there is live music. We visited on a Sunday and the entire place was packed out. We sat upstairs and had a fab view of the square. The venue really is a photograph paradise. We ordered the only Indonesian meal on the menu which was gorgeous and little spicy. The menu us very varied across cuisines and prices.
HOWEVER. We had to wait 15minutes before our drinks were served after asking twice more. People had to get their own menus and when you needed to order there was no one to be seen. The service let down the entire meal experience however later when we ordered a taxi the guy from the front desk actually walked us to the taxi which was decent.

You must visit this place as it is a wonderful area to walk around and people watch and then get your lunch. I would have liked to go after work or evening and sit at the bar.

There are not many places like this in the world so go but please be prepared for the poor service. It is also a little bit pricey but you are paying for the venue and atmosphere which was a haven away from Jakarta traffic.

“Looks old, smells old, dirty & not worth time & money”
Reviewed May 13, 2013 via mobile

I was really looking forward to Café Batavia because the reviews on TripA had been encouraging and pictures of the place looked really nice. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.

The smoking section looks like a dodgy dive bar: dark and shrouded in smoke. We headed upstairs to the non-smoking section and the warning bells in my head started to peal. The carpet was faded, the once white upholstery was a very dull shade of off white and the wall of fame beautifully depicted on TripA looked like a dilapidated tribute to what once was.

It was Sunday so there were buskers and performers milling around on the square below. We chose a table by the window to watch the crowd. I noticed there were chunks of meat on the table, so we had to sit elsewhere. The table setting was also faded, the decoration dated and the menu unappealing.

We had about 1.5 hours to kill before we had to head to the airport so we decided to have a good meal and go back to the hotel. We decided to go with cappuccinos (worst capp I've ever had), an eggs benedict with caviar and a sup buntut (oxtail soup). The food took almost 20 mins to arrive and when it did we were so unhappy. The plates were stained and I felt like calling for boiling water to sterilise the utensils.

The eggs were almost cooked, there was hardly any runny yolk left, the aeoli was watery and the dish was served with what must have been fish croquettes. Very weird. The caviar lent no flavour to the dish.

The sup buntut was bland. There was more bones than meat and the rice was squishy and wet. We didn't finish our food and ended up feeling cheated.

Disheartened, we called for the bill (95++ MYR) and asked the waiter to call a cab for us after which we were told that the cab would take 30-60 minutes to get to the café. !PRO TIP: Don't head down here if you intend to grab a cab back to wherever you're going and happen to be in a rush!

When we finally did get a cab, we were relieved to just get out of the place. If you love to eat good food and a morning coffee is the best thing in the world to you, please don't punish yourself by coming to this place. Life is too short!

“nice change”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

its a nice and old style cafe, which is beautifully decorated with old style furniture and pictures on the walls. It is a nice escape from the busy streets off Jakarta, you walk in and find a calming atmosphere.
If you are on a budget, like we were you would find it expensive, due to the price off the food and drinks, compared to other places in Jakarta.
However it is an experience, and its worth trying the kopi luwak coffee, however you can this cheaper in other parts on Indonesia!
