Apart from the vibrant club scene, there are not that many must see places in Jakarta. Cafe Batavia on the historic Fatahillah in Jakarta's old city (Kota) is one of them. This is a place where you can go for drinks at the bar or a very good meal and some groovy music without the noise and hassle of the clubs. I distinctly enjoy a place where I can savor a great scotch and here my partner speak.
Cafe Batavia exists in a time warp reminiscent of Rick's American Bar in Casablanca (in the movie of the same name). The place is redolent of colonial times and I recommend going there if only for the decor and the old world atmosphere. It feels real here and not like a disneyesque or Vegas clone.
The restaurant serves good cuisine, although I'm not sure that I would brave the Jakarta traffic for it, if it were not for the atmosphere of the place. Once you're there though, it's an oasis of comfort and pleasure.
The decor is unique and the standouts are the long bar, the hundreds of photos on the walls of celebs of yesteryear, including an iconic one of Sukarno, the father of the nation, and the very comfortable upstairs lounge. One can spend many a pleasant hour here.
A great advantage of the ambiance is that you can concentrate on the live music on offer most nights.
Don't miss this place when in Jakarta.
