“Not too good, not too bad”
Review of Ragunan Zoo

Ragunan Zoo
Reviewed August 3, 2013

I was prepared to see worse things ( I was a couple of weeks in BandungZoo) but it was actually better. Some animals where in small cages though, but most, e.g. lions, had some free space. There was no rubbish and no people threatening the animals. There was plenty of activities, like go carts and elephant riding, and there where some small "warungs".

The poor animals in this zoo are merely serving as exotic back drop for family outings, company functions, photo shoots etc.
You can't blame the people of Jakarta for going there as it is one of the few green spaces available in the entire city which is also relatively clean and has a minimum entry fee. Unfortunately the visitors leave an enormous amount of rubbish which often ends up in the animals enclosures. On top of that cars, motorcycles and buses are allowed in the zoo - before opening hours - which only adds more pollution...
Little to no information on the animals - so no educational value.

The areas outside the enclosures are far bigger than the enclosures themselves and the animals seem to lead an extremely depressing life.
Indonesia is known for its bad management of zoos; the money usually ends up in someone's pocket ..... And unfortunately they do not really care about the animals..

I just wish the Jakarta administration would send the animals to a good zoo overseas and make this green area into the park it already is. But then without cars/motor cycles.

Ragunan Zoo is one of my favorite places, which I often visited in weekend. Apart from the many animals collection, it is a nice place to walk around, give my body a good exercise, after a routine weekdays work.

I also liked to sit back on the benches that were located everywhere in the huge park, just to enjoy the sound of birds' and primates' callings. When I swapped my eyes to various big trees above, there were always birds, jumping, flying, singing, branch to branch, free --- All kinds of back-yard birds which I don't always get to see in the concrete-jungle of Jakarta, they are still there at Ragunan; to name a few: Tekukur, Gereja, Kutilang, Cerocokan, Prenjak, Kipasan, Cabean, Ayam2an, Gelatik, Dara, Sriti, Madu Sriganti, some squirrels, red-tailed and regular brown-furred.

During one of my visits, it suddenly rained heavily, when I was sitting on the bench in front of the Pelicans' lake. All the Pelicans halted, just standing without moving, like some kind of statues. After sometime, when the rain had become lighter, the Pelicans opened their wide wings and racing into the lake catching some food. Seems like some birds also took shower, flying back and forth, up and down the lake water. What an experience! So, remember to bring big wide umbrella, as it gave a different kind of experience to watch the wild lives behavior during/after rain.

And if you like to watch birds and squirrels, bringing telescope would be helpful.
