If you plan to visit Krakatau from Jakarta and are on a budget, than this is a challenge, but so worthwhile. You catch the Jakarta Busway bus to Terminal Kalideras. Than you catch the transit bus from Kalideras to Labuan. When you get to Labuan you can either go by motor bike or Bemo to Carita Beach. Once at Carita, it is easy to organise a boat to the volcano, through any hotel. It will cost a minimum of $ 250. There are no ATMs at Carita so get your money in Jakarta or Labuan. The trek up the volcano is not so difficult and snorkling at the nearby island is great. The coral is fantastic. Have a good trip.

If you are in Indonesia this is a must see side visit. The boat trip out we saw an shark whale, which in itself made the trip worth it. A very hot hike up, but great views.

Well I might say its not wise to do so, but I hiked to Krakatau while she is active. Regularly erupting stones & dust every ~30mins with extreme loud bang!

I went here with 15 others, took the simplest route that I know:
Jakarta - Carita - Jakarta (rent a car)
Carita - Krakatau - Carita (rent a boat with meals & tour guide included)

Took us about 5hrs boat ride from Carita to Krakatau, hiked to the peak for an hour one way.
We noticed that Krakatau been active for about a week. The eruption clearly can be seen & heard in Carita but still we decided to carry on. It was awesome experience though. Got one loud bang while we're 100meters away from the peak..of course the only words that I can hear was "RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!"

The trek was sandy & extremely hot, wear a comfort trekking shoe is a must!
Cover yourself from the sun, wear light clothes to cool your self easily.

Camped for a night on the opposite island (Rakata) facing the Krakatau, where we can clearly see the lava drip at night time. Spent most of the time swimming & snorkling here.

Arranged our own trip budget-share, only cost me ~500K IDR at that time for the car - boat - meals - tents.
One thing that we forgot was to work on entry permit in advance, a Ranger Team came to check us. Luckily the tour guide know the officer, otherwise we might get kicked out the island right away! I will consider the entry permit as a fee for this attraction, but cant help you to tell how much it will cost.
All an all, it was a superb awesome experience!

Cant get a more memorable Christmas day than camping and trekking on Anak Krakatoa. We booked a 2 day 1 night tour of Krakatoa. We were collect from Jakarta airport and driven to Carita where we stayed the night. The next morning we met our guide and headed to Krakatoa. The sea was ok, a little rough as we got close to Krakatoa but the boat was decent. We circled round Anak Krakatoa and then landed on it where we would camp the night. The volcano has been quiet recently so camping at the base of it was safe even though there was quite a lot of smoke. In the evening we trekked to the first level but had to turn back due to the sulfur gas. We were given snacks and drinks whenever we wanted and had grilled fish waiting for us when we returned to camp. We had another trek early the next morning when the wind had dropped and the conditions were excellent. We got to the the first level and walked to the recent lava flow which was still venting hot gases. You can feel the heat from the ground when walking. We had breakfast and set off to Rakata island (nearby) for snorkeling and lunch. The water was crystal clear and many fish were swimming around us. We had a lovely lunch with the only annoyance being that we had to chase away 4 monitor lizards that also wanted our food! The weather on the way back was perfect! Sunshine and completely flat seas. Our driver was waiting as we arrived to drive us to our hotel in Jakarta.

The whole experience was amazing and if you're into geology then its one of the best experiences you can have. We booked with krakatoa-tour.com who were highly recommended to do the 2 day 1 night. Decent boat, excellent guide, lots and lots of food/drink and well organised. We saw flying fish on the crossing, monitor lizards on the beach, crabs, birds and many colourful fish. I would recommend the 2 day tour as 1 day would have been very rushed and tiring if coming all the way from Jakarta and back.

A friend and I booked the day trip to Anak Krakatau. We departed early from Jakarta and were met with rain for the last hour of our drive, which was still coming down by the time we hit the marina. As a result, the seas were a bit choppy, so the 90 minute boat trip was a bit jarring, but not awful. We landed on Anak Krakatau and started our hike through the jungle and up the mountain. I should say that you do need to be moderately fit to complete the hike -it's quite hot and steep and climbing what is essentially a mountain of sand and ash isn't especially easy. It is really very very cool, though, and the views are lovely.

Friend and I had both been feeling a bit unwell lately and the weather was being iffy, so we decided to forgo the snorkeling and head back. The guide was really lovely and everyone was very accommodating and friendly. I think if we'd been feeling more up to it, we'd have had an even better time, but still, being there and seeing the islands and the steaming volcano is incredibly cool, so I would recommend it if your interest is piqued!
