Four Points by Sheraton Lhasa

For Tibetan standards, this is a luxury hotel. For western standards this is a good hotel.
First impression of the hotel:
From the outside, we only can see a massive wall with windows – no charm, no design and the access to the lobby is trough a couple of stairs – really not impressive.
The lobby is quite small and lacks charisma, the interior area between the lobby and the restaurant looks a bit rundown.
Even the corridor to access the elevator is small and under-decorated – the elevator is slow.

Location – With a 10-minute walk you´ll be in the Jokhang Temple and Barkhorn Street. With a taxi everything is near . Taxis are cheap (10Yuans traveling inside the city). Plenty of food stores in front and nearby the hotel.

Rooms - We stayed in a triple room and all I can say is that is really good, not luxurious but comfortable, with enough space. Large bathroom .
We only had problems with the A/c -very strange and difficult to regulate
No internet in the room – only free WIFI in the lobby (slow).

Restaurants – We had breakfast in the hotel. Good with limited choices. The bread offer is small. As expected more oriental options.
We have a dinner at t " Oxygen" – Good not great but expensive.

There is a small offer for good hotels in Lhasa. It is obvious for any traveler the low quality of hotels and restaurants in Tibet. But that is no excuse to do not have a great time. As we were aware of what to do/see and eat we had no problems and really enjoy our days in Tibet.

We spend 3 nights at the Sheraton as part of a Viking River Cruise and trip to Tibet. The hotel is very conveniently located to all the important sites in Lhasa and has comfortable rooms. While not luxurious, it is certainly more than adequate and there is a very good restaurant with lots of western choices as well as local fare available on the buffet. I developed altitude sickness the first night we arrived and we were able to go to the hotel desk to get a doctor. There is a clinic connected with the hotel and the doctor came to my room, did several tests and put me on interveous treatment, oxygen and medication by mouth. I was fine by afternoon. Several others on our tour also became ill (probably 1/3), some more seriously but all were fine to walk out on their own when we left the hotel. For the convenience and professionalism of the medical service alone, I would give the hotel a 5 star rating. Without the medical service, I think it is 3.5 to 4 star. We did think that the air conditioning system needed upgrades. We could never adjust it to give us the right temperature.

Very friendly and helpful staff especially for those not quite acclimatized. There are quite a varied range of room types. Some are in the main hotel and then there aer rooms at the back which obviously don't get a view and are currently having problems with airconditioning. defiantly make sure you get a room in the main building as these have lifts. Even one flight of stairs is difficult!
There is a small shop across the road for snacks and it isn't too far a walk into town.
Breakfast is basic but good. Bar service can be a bit slow, but staff truly seem happy to be working here and are the best part of the hotel.

Room Tip: A front room facing the potala in the main buidling.

Spent several nights here while touring Lhasa. Has all the amenities of a standard Four Points and serves as a comfortable base for exploring the City. Good location within walking distance to the centre.

Modern hotels are a luxury in Tibet. This is one of the very limited modern western chain hotels (another one that I am aware of is the St Regis, located near to this hotel).

We upgraded to this hotel as we wanted to have a comfortable rest after 10 days of traveling in Tibet, and we were really glad with our decision.

My friends and I agreed that this particular Four Points is of higher quality than other typical Four Points found in the US. The lobby though small, is very comfortable, modern, clean, smells great (it smells of cinnamon..). The front-desk personnel are friendly and efficient.

The rooms are not big, but again - they looked very well maintained, modern, clean, with comfortable beds and pillows and the bathrooms have clean bath towels and good toiletries.

There is only 1 restaurant but the breakfast was GREAT, with a wide variety of food selection, suited for western travelers. But the service could have been improved. Most waiters were helpful with the exception of one, who was really grumpy (maybe she was just having a bad day?). The restaurant has a decent range of menu but the price is about double of what you can get from outside. But we did eat there once as there is nothing much nearby (read more below). The food took quite awhile to arrive even though we were the only guests there. However, it was quite delicious, so we didn't mind.

My only minor disappointments were:
1) the spa only opens at 11.30am, which I felt is a little too late
2) the location - there is nothing to see / eat, nearby the hotel. You need to walk about 12 - 15 min. to Bahkor street where you can find shops & restaurants. But the walk is not too bad (along main road) and most importantly, it is rather safe (even at 11pm), as there are a lot of policemen stationed along the roads.

Myself and 2 friends stayed for 4 nights in May and another 3 nights in June. The resident doctor and tha availability of oxygen was a great feature as one of our group has respitary problems and Dr Feng was available when required and provided great care. The staff were kind and very friendly, especially reception and the concierge staff. Although the hotel is 15 minutes away from the touristy areas of Barkhor Street and the Jokhang Temple, that was not a disadvantage. Taxis are readily available and there is a standard charge for anywhere in Lhasa.
Make sure the hotel provides you with a note of the address as taxi drivers do not understand English.
The breakfasts were hit or miss as far a sthe quantity of cooked food or cold juice available, depending on the size of the tour groups and the dining room staff need training.

I'm glad we upgraded our hotel in Lhasa to the Four Points. Tibet is not a great place for good hotels and good ones like this are rare.

The hotel appears to have been built in phases. The main block, where the reception is, is ok but maybe a bit basic. There is a newer part to the left of the hotel (when looking at the front of the hotel from the road). Rooms there are newer with very nice decor and facilities.

One of the most valuable items in our room was a humidifier. The air was absolutely bone-dry in April. Wired internet is provided, though it is a bit slow at times. Other room amenities were excellent.

the breakfast buffet is very good - ideal to fortify you prior to seeing the sights of Lhasa and also provides good food in the evening. The staff are a bit slapdash but they mean well.

If you visit other cities in Tibet you will appreciate the Four Points even more.........

Room Tip: best rooms in new block at east end of hotel
