“Summer palace worth visiting”
Reviewed November 1, 2013

Norbulingka is my 2nd favorite monastery besides Potala Palace. It's a bit far from the city center and might be a bit hard to find a taxi willing to take you there but it's a good thing we have an experienced tour guide. She was the one who found a taxi that won't charge us over the top.

The entrance fee is 60 RMB per pax.

This place is huge and if you're not fond of walking under the sun, it's best to get a ride from the carts which cost only 10 RMB per pax. There are lots of little temples and rooms around the area with beautiful gardens. There's also a zoo which costs 10 RMB per pax. The zoo contains animals such as bears, wolf, ostrich, monkeys, birds etc. Some of the animals such as the monkeys seem well taken care off but there are some other animals which seem neglected.

“Summer Home of Dalai Lama”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

Unprepossessing garden setting and buildings but the entire history of Buddhism and Tibet is illustrated on the walls. Go with a Tibetan English-speaking guide to get the most out of this amazing story and place. Most fascinating place in Lhasa!

“A nice spot”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

The gardens are beautiful and if you have been on the road for a long time (or like gardens) this is a nice spot to visit. You could bring a picnic as all the Chinese seem to do, or just stroll around. It's not an unmissable sight if time is short, but worth seeing if you have a couple of days. Bear in mind that the entry fee is ludicrously high by Lhasa standards (60-70 yuan I think).

You can also see the place where the Dalai Lama spent his last night in Lhasa before fleeing; if you look closely in his throne room, you'll even see his picture painted on the wall, one of the very very few places in Tibet where you'll see any visual representation of the current incumbent. Worth a visit for that alone.

“Could be better”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

The complex is not well preserved, and while the stroll around the greenery is nice, the sights are not particularly impressive. No photos allowed inside the buildings is also a hindrance
