“Best hotel and best hotel staff in China, period”
Reviewed August 18, 2012

Spent an amazing 4 days at this property and was impressed at every turn. Gorgeous property, excellent location, best service staff we've seen, views of Potala Palace (esp. nice at night), stunning pool. Little wine bar below the lobby ("Decanter") is largely undiscovered with outstanding menu and selection; we basically took it over nightly with the kids and had a great time. The champagne sabering on Thursday evenings is a must. A great refuge to "home base" from while exploring Lhasa and the surrounding region!

Room Tip: I don't think there is a bad room in this hotel.

I'm an avid traveller and usually stay in luxury hotels, but I have never experienced such great customer service in my life. The food was also superb, and the rooms were very spacious and had all you would ever think you'd need and more. When visiting Lhasa, don't consider staying anywhere else! This is the first time a write a review, I just had to after this great experience!

Most impressive place we have ever stayed at. We stayed for three nights in mid July of 2012. Everything was perfect! Great food, location, and staff. The room and view were out of this world. We were able to see the Potala Palace from several locations in the hotel which was a bonus. We are not used to such luxury.

We stayed at the St. Regis Lhasa Resort for four nights in June 2012. This is a magnificent luxury resort near the center of Lhasa, with beautiful public areas and spacious and tastefully decorated rooms. There are both Chinese and western restaurants in the hotel, and the food was very good for a city not known for culinary arts. Even the pizza we had one day was thin, crispy and better than most served in Los Angeles! The breakfast buffet was excellent, with many choices and even Shanghai style tea eggs. Service in general was outstanding. The only complaint was that water pressure in our 5th floor was sometimes quite low, and it often took running the faucets for 3 to 4 minutes to get hot water. One tip is don't pay extra to get the Potala Palace view room, which we believe cost about 20% more than our garden view room, as the palace is quite a distance away and the view is not that impressive. We had no plans to visit Lhasa prior to the opening of the St. Regis resort, and we are glad we waited.

My wife and I stayed at the St. Regis for 4 nights (on points) in May 2012. We have traveled extensively and have a good basis to judge this property relative to other St. Regis properties. This was part of a trip that included driving from Lhasa to Kathmandu (which was amazing).

First of all, this is the best hotel is Lhasa, and i believe the entire country. For anyone planning to venture outside of Lhasa, be prepared for a "significant" downgrade in all aspects. I had read all of the reviews prior to arriving and i have an opinion as to the bifurcation of scores... Some (most) people love the hotel, but yet there are a few that provide dismal ratings.

If you expect this St. Regis to provide the same experience to the St Regis in New York (or even Beijing) you are going to be dissapointed. Critics may say that a St. Regis experience should be the same worldwide, but i think you need to allow for some level of localization. Tibet is pretty isolated and I reset my expectations prior to arriving. We enjoyed our stay a lot and would reccomend it highly. It is expensive (on points or $$), but it provides a great "oasis" from which to explore the area.

Edward and Christian on the management team were really fantastic. My wife had some elevation problems and they arranged for oxygen in the room and some customized room service. They also directed us to (the only?) store in Lhasa that sold peanut butter that we ended us using for lunches as we drove across the country :)

Dining: The breakfast buffet was very good... Rivalling some of the better ones i've experienced. Lunches were good too, but pretty standard western food. We did dinner in the western restaurant which was ok. We ate out in town the rest of the nights.

Staff: As some reviewers have pointed out, there is a significant language gap (in general) from the staff. Key people (butler, management, concierge) are fine, but you should assume some gaps with the wait staff, room service, housekeeping, etc... Not a huge problem, but an area that can be improved. The staff is very nice, however. And without trying to stereotype too much, the Tibetan staff seemed genuinely happy to be there and were very helpful.

All in all, a great hotel in a fantastic city. understand in advance you are getting 80-90% of the "full" St. Regis Experience, but staying in the best hotel in the country.

Room Tip: Facing the pond and spa

This was one of the most beautiful hotels I've ever experienced! It's odd to gush over a hotel when you've just seen the incredible Patola Palace, but the hotel is a destination in itself. A room that is more like a suite (with outdoor seating on the first floor), public areas that almost look like a museum, wonderful food, gracious staff. Just fabulous!

This hotel is so incredibly beautiful. There is a view of the Potala palace from the lobby. The staff is incredible, gracious and helpful. The rooms are huge. The bathrooms are beautiful. If you get a chance to go to Tibet. You have to stay at this hotel.
