“Unique Tibetan courtyard style hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2013 via mobile

The hotel is really nicely designed and located very centrally in the old town Lhasa.
The rooms are really cool and give you a sense of what they may have looked like when Lhasa was on the trade route with Nepal.
Staff is very helpful especially when we were struggling with altitude sickness.
One downside is the current construction in Lhasa old town. This is out of the control of the hotel, and should be over by August.
Very good value

This is one of my all time favorite hotels. It's a small courtyard style hotel in traditional Tibetan style. The rooms are so beautiful and very spacious. The food is to die for and the location excellent. The manager, Lobsang, is extremely helpful and the staff are wonderful. It was such cosy place and the staff treated me like their family. It was the type of place where I didn't have to lock my door - and I'm female and was traveling by myself. I have never encountered this level of safety anywhere in my travels and have never come across it since. It has all the modern comforts and they speak very good English. I miss this place and long to go back. If you're traveling to Tibet don't pass up the opportunity to stay in this wonderful Tibetan treasure.

Simply put, there are two categories of “luxury stays” Lhasa. The obvious one is at a 4-5 star international hotel [soon add a Shangri-La now under construction]. With this choice you will have the same amenities and ambiance found around the world, with a few local touches splashed about. Your fellow guests will be Chinese nouveau riche, with some western business-tourists sprinkled into the mix. Or you may choose Tibetan “luxury” and stay in a finely renovated traditional Lhasa family villa, with a private courtyard, excellent small dining room and a spacious rooftop terrace with views across the city to the Potala Palace and surrounding mountains.

If the traditional stay is your preferred option, you can do no better than the House of Shambhala. Located just a few minutes walk south of the Barkhor Square markets and the Jokhang Palace - the sights, sounds and smells of the city are an integral part of the wonderful experience. The 4-story building is well preserved/restored, and decorated with traditional Tibetan images, furnishings and artifacts. Our room [#102] was spacious and comfortable [though dimly lit], with an Asian-firm bed and plenty of warm duvets. A space heater was provided for added warmth during the chilly mountain nights, and heat lamps kept the bath/shower comfortable. Plastic clogs are provided to keep your feet dry/warm on the traditional stone and wood floors. Though we found all to be very quiet from ~2200 to 0730 for a good night’s sleep.

The hotel team is very friendly and helpful, responding to even the slightest hint of a request. We found the restaurant team to be extremely kind and thoughtful, and all of our meals well prepared and deliciously seasoned. They were among the very best we had in Lhasa.

And the rooftop terrace offers a wonderful place to relax, read, drink and just enjoy the sights, sounds and sunshine. In addition to the views across the city and surrounding mountain scenes, you can look into the very heart of life in Lhasa, watching the comings and goings of the locals... and perhaps take in some of their seemingly inexhaustible supply of happiness.
