This little guest house was a lovely escape in Tibet.
We had booked a tour but decided not to stay at the Yak Hotel, where the rest of the tour group stayed - instead we checked into Rama Kharpo & were very happy with the decision. The Yak Hotel was a standard-style hotel similar to what you'd get anywhere else in China. The Rama Kharpo was like staying with family!
The rooms aren't posh or new - but they are great - especially for the price. The beds were the most comfortable we've had across china (they are western-style) and they come with electric blankets so they are snuggly warm when you crawl into them.
The location is FUN - in the middle of the Muslim quarter so lots of neat food stalls with a different group of Tibetans who are friendly and chatty - it's less busy than the main Barkhor area, but close enough that you don't miss a beat.
The best part of the Rama Kharpo is the family that runs the place. Every day Lhamo and Lumbem check on you to make sure your stay is perfect. They are helpful in planning your adventures if you need it or just checking out your photos with you and explaining the history of the region. They run the cafe which offers great food and snacks, is full of other Westerners to chat with, and they always have tea waiting when you get back from a long day. Spending time with them, learning about their Tibetan traditions and their family history is one of the many things we'll remember about this trip forever.
Many thanks Lhamo & Lumbem for a great stay!
If you are having trouble contacting or booking (their website is under construction) - it's best to email them: email@example.com
When we booked - we just said "Canada" and our dates, and when we showed up our room was waiting! We loved it!
