Eastern Pearl Hotel
Ranked #36 of 1,952 Hotels in Nanjing
Reviewed July 29, 2012

The hotel is around 15 minutes walk from the metro station. The hotel is ideally located so that it is easy to go out for foods. The service of the hotel is as good as a 4 star hotel. However, the hotel is an old one with a little bit dirty on the carpet. The space of the bathroom is quite limited.

The Eastern Pearl is a well located nine-story modern looking building with a large and impressive lobby. It has two good sized and reliable lifts. The room booked had a large office with two sections to work in and these separated the bathroom from the bedroom. The bathroom was modern and of a good size. It was well stocked with toiletries but not toilet paper. The bedroom was of a good size with a comfortable bed and good reading lights. There was a safe in the room and a TV which couldn't be made to work. The room was pleasant enough, but the carpet was looking tired and in places the finish was poor. The corridors have a modern look and are suitably wide. The dining room is large and pleasantly decorated with semi-private rooms to one side. The food was well presented and there was a good selection of both Chinese and western food. Twin-bed rooms were of a good size with a sofa and coffee table. The hotel is rated as four star and this is probably fair enough on balance, but there were touches that detracted from this rating.

Pros
- friendly staff
- ideal location in the city centre
- internet

Cons
- there is a building lot (new metro station) near the hotel right now
- not all staff were able to speak english, on the other hand there was always someone who helped
- the cigarette smoke from corridor can be sometimes smelled in the room (the room itself was not smelly)

Whilst the Eastern Pearl is clearly designed for business travellers to Nanjing, we (as a couple with mother) found it the perfect base for exploring the local area as tourists for a day. Recommended.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip: Going up the Purple Mountain is probably only worth it on a clear day. The cable car is a long (boring) ride when you can't see anything!

Pro:
A reasonably priced hotel from Agoda (@345RMB – in fact Agoda is recommended by the hotel staff for extra nights as cheaper than the over the counter price of 410RMB!). Arrived by train from Suzhou so got the metro to Guangzhou Rd stop but that is not super close although a straight walk. If moving around town on the metro (basically 2RMB for 5–6 stops – machines can select English and quick touch screens) Zhong Shan stop to S on Taiping Lu is possibly best as virtually same distance. There is also a railway ticket office on West side of Taiping Lu just before Zhong Shan for onward trips to avoid station mania – just have train number and time written out (find on Net). Room was comfortable twin bed size on the 5th floor (501) on West side which is probably important at the moment as I think the noisy work on the third Metro line is happening on the east side which might be troublesome. Suguo Community Store in W side street handy for groceries/fruit. Hotel restaurant is reasonably priced for dinner (did not eat breakfast in the hotel) and food (Macau style??) quite good – although expecting a large open restaurant it was somewhat bizarre to eat on my own in a private room for six people with bizarre décor -purple and mirrors on 2 walls, chandelier and purple ceiling! Nanjing 1912 “entertainment quarter” is close and may be good for bar hoppers but the high prices at a Thai restaurant there put me off ($40 for a pad Thai?!)
Con:
Bathroom a bit squeezy as toilet right behind the door and shower cabinet rather small. No WiFi but LAN OK (though not very speedy, usual Chinese speed). Internet enabled TV with WiFi keyboard and mouse may have worked but never did find out as turned it off as the fan was too noisy! It is further from the Guangzhou Rd metro station than it looks (solid 10 min walk). Although generally one English speaker at front desk in peak periods probably not at other times. Staff are otherwise friendly however.

Room Tip: definitely go West side due to metro 3rd line work on East side (Dec.'11)

We stayed here because it was the only room we could find that was both affordable and available at zero notice. We were quite worried about the decision since the reviewer below seemed to have a had such a bad experience, but were happy to discover that it was totally fine... more than fine, it was actually good!

The business twin was carpeted and nicely furnished with a desk and even a small table to sit and eat at. The intenet connection worked fine and the room was relatively clean - no random smells as we found in other parts of China. Best of all, the service was excellent... they went out of their way to help us wherever they could, whether it be fulfilling a late night request for extra bottles of water, or racing out into peak hour traffic to grab us a taxi when we were about to miss our train back to Shanghai (we caught it without 30secs to spare... whew!) The location was also convenient - we were able to walk to both the Gujimin temple and Purple Mountain, which made things very simple.

Only a few minor shortfalls come to mind -
+ they permit smoking the lobby... eek
+ the people in the room next to us seemed to be having a party which was quite loud and kept us awake for a bit longer than usual
+ there were also some random drumming noises coming from somewhere - sounded like someone was having a festival outside our window at midnight...
+ toilet paper holder had some major structural probs and was totally disfunctional
+ my yoga practising husband claims the carpet was a bit dirty

For the price we paid (roughly $45/nght) though, we were very pleased with this choice.
