The Fuzi Miao area in Nanjing is a lovely way to spend the afternoon or evening. It is set up in two parts with larger lanes offering name brand clothing and shops and then smaller lanes selling touristy trinkets, jewellery etc. This spot is great for family's with children of any age. There are boat rides offered up and down the small channel for around 60rmb for a half hour. There is a wide selection of food from McDonalds and Pizza Hut to local street food. The area is particularly lovely at night or on a warm fall or spring day.
For an extra 100rmb or so, which includes a tour guide who can 'sort of' speak English, you can tour the test center for the Imperial Examination was offered on this site from early in the 7th century. I found the pictures of what the site looked like during that time to be quite amazing and the stories related to those writing the exams were very intriguing.
Not only is it worth a visit but it is a place where local Chinese and foreigners visit regularly for shopping, lunch and a stroll along the water.
