“Reasonable Downtown Nanjing Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2008

It was a great hotel, but I couldn't help continually thinking there must be some place better in Nanjing. The value was not high. The location was convenient. The rooms were very nice. But something was missing. It was almost as if the hotel staff had been there too long. It was not a special place.

I arrived after midnight in the hotel and check-in was done within 3 min. No complaints at all.
The rooms are spacious , very well decorated - seems that have been renewed recently. Everything was clean.
Also bathroom and the bed were very good. Service worked also very well .

I stayed there for the second time and for me this hotel is a definitely a good option.

Hmmn, Crowne Plaza Nanjing. What to say?

Well, it's just one of the strangest places I have ever stayed. Nothing about the experience really works properly. I don't mean the lifts or internet access, nothing so practical, as everything works fine. It's just that there are noticable gaps where service should be and when the service isn't there a hotel doesn't, well, work for guests.

An example would be.. you arrive at the hotel, go to the lifts to check in on 7th floor ( why why why ), wait ages for the lift which eventually comes only to go to the 7th floor and upon exit have lots of junior bell boys and girls milling around getting in the way while all you want to do is check in. The set up is quite irritating. Does it sound petty? Well you try it and see ... if you dare.

One of these bellgirls insisted on walking the 20 metres to check in with us when we clearly weren't going to get lost on the way. It reminded me of being escorted to my seat at a wedding by an usher who wasn't briefed who was getting married.

Fine, but when we arrived there and wanted to check in at the empty set of desks nobody wanted to assist us which left her flapping around unable to think what to do ( shouldn't she have explained to her colleagues we were checking in and asked for help? ) . It's all a bit stilted and amateurish, and there is no flow or professionalism about the hotel.

Check in was an ordeal, the hotel gave us a twin bed room. They checked us into a twin room and then told us that was what they had done ( why not check the reservation details prior to the allocation of rooms?? ) so we then sat there and waited even longer while they decided if they had a room for us with a double bed (they did).

When we finally reached our room it was ok. A bit small and so high up that it makes you reach for a sick bag ( 40 something floor ) but the bed is fairly comfortable and there is a shower that works so it's ok. Don't get me wrong it is a nice enough hotel, clean and bright and if I was going back for business or running a conference I might want to use the hotel.

Good points about it were:
1) The hotel bar was ok, with piano music and they served cocktails. The wait staff in the bar were nice.
2) There was internet access, and if you used the internet for just a few minutes it was free ( not sure if it should have been?)
3) The location is ok, but it is quite difficult to get a cab to the hotel as it's a bit away from the road.
4) The cab boys outside would get you a cab as long as you tip them something for doing so.
5) Breakfast was nice, buffet style.

Nothing about it really felt individual, and that felt like quite a let down. So if you are planning a special trip think about what you need. If you want the basics then go ahead and book here, if you want something on a better level best say no.

On an alternative note, we did like Nanjing very much and had lots of good nightlife and restaurant and cultural stuff to see and do. It was an amazing town and we were lucky to have seen it.
Would recommend the Sheraton for drinks and food, it's not too far away from here.

Having read the reviews here, I knew the lobby was on the 7th floor. I did not know that four weeks after the reservation was made, the check-in clerk would shrug his shoulders and mutter that the type of room reserved was not available. Two beds were requested, only a king was available and "nothing can be done," even for an elite Priority Club members such as I.

Everyone had such pleasant smiles here. Everyone greeted you. Problem is, they cannot do anything about its problems. So the room was not right, and I got one of the smallest they have. Then the first night, at about 5 p.m., I went to the doorman to get a taxi. "Better try out on the street," was the reply. The street is around to the other side of the building, 30 to 75 meters depending on which way you go. Second night at 6:20, as I went to the doorman for a taxi, "Better try out on the street," was the consistent reply. Two out of two, when you look for a dinner taxi you are on your own. This claims to be a five-star hotel, but gives five-star smiles with one-star service. Yes, those were the corporate plastic smiles I saw, as the staff cannot create customer satisfaction. After their plastic smiles wore off, they were indifferent and into their own worlds, not yours.

The room was well equipped, clean, and worked. The facility is fine. The little window in the room looked out high over Nanjing, but the city was too hazy to see much of anything for three days.

This hotel is fine if everything goes smoothly. If not, if you have a problem, expect a "We cannot do anything about it, but we are certainly sorry it happened." Yeah, and I am sorry I ever checked into the Nanjing Crowne Plaza.

I stayed at Crowne Plaza for 3 weeks (21 nights) in June 2007 for business in Nanjing area. I am fully satisfied with this hotel. It is located in the very downtown of Nanjing, just 10 minutes walk from the city business/shopping district. The hotel is adjacent to the Golden Eagle department store, so you can do shopping even without going outside, if you want. The entrance to the hotel is from the backyard if you arrive by taxi, or through the Golden Eagle store if you walk in. If you want public transportation, the subway station is about 5 minutes walk. The hotel is a high raised building, which has something else besides the hotel on the lower floors. The hotel’s reception is on the 7th floor, restaurant and gym are on the 9th floor, guests rooms are on the 37~52 floors. The elevators are always busy but I never waited more than 2~3 minutes. The service is excellent. Morning buffet breakfast is just perfect. In the evenings, there is a choice of buffet, grill, a la carte, or you can order from the same a la carte to your room. Gym is fine, pool is small but OK, sauna and steam bath are OK. The room was clean. The bed was firm but it is OK for me. The view from the room was nice. TV was big and had HBO. I had a separate shower and bath in my room, which I liked much. AC was dual – central for the room and additional for the bed. In my opinion, the highlights of this place are: excellent service, perfect breakfast and convenient location. I would recommend this hotel to any of my friends.

This is a very efficient business hotel. Since we were there for the weekend, we were upgraded to a suite -- spacious, attractive, and convenient. Everything about the hotel was just great -- except that the check-in is on the seventh floor -- and involved our first of many elevator delays. Our room was on the thirty-fifth floor -- and that involved interminable waits for the elevator at peak times (e.g., breakfast). As well, the entrance is designed for cars; getting out the drive and coming back to the hotel involves dodging cars -- a tricky manoeuvre after dark.

  • Liked — spacious, clean, and attractive room
  • Disliked — waiting for the elevator

We stayed here end of february 2007 and had the first problem already prior to check-in. The hotel and a department store are sharing the same building and all parking space was occupied. The hotel staff did not manage to find a parking for us and we were on our own!
The lobby is located on the 7th floor and kind of difficult to find, espcially when coming from the basement carpark. The check-in was fast and the staff was friendly, professional and english-speaking.
The room is no surprise, just standard China and a little old, but clean. The view is very nice as all rooms are located on high floors (37th floor up).
After all the hotel is just OK but for my next Nanjing visit I will check for better value for money.
