Regalia Resort & Spa Nanjing Qinhuai River
Ranked #608 of 1,952 Hotels in Nanjing
Reviewed July 18, 2011

As I’ve stayed at Regalia in Suzhou before, I chose Nanjing’s Regalia this time. Interestingly in Suzhou the architecture is a combination of Thai style and Suzhou garden and the resort’s architecture in Nanjing is a combination of Thai style and Nanjing’s typical ancient fortification. There’s also a nice river in the room in this resort. Big room with large windows as well. Spa at this resort is quite relaxing. If you can afford high-end spa, you must have a try here. I was packing my luggage and called the front desk I needed a taxi before checking out. The taxi was already waiting outside when I went to the hall.

Certainly need hotel staff to instruct taxi driver how to get back to hotel! All taxi drivers did not know the location by looking at the hotel address & map. Mosquito is a problem. It is disappointing that when u return to room in evening, u find the oil essense is not prepared. Candles were not replaced after used up. Very few restaurant choice in hotel. Built-in spa in room is appreciated. However the spa is not as good as spa in 5-star hotel in Bangkok. But the price is 5-star standard. The thing is that it is very hot and sunny from morning till 7pm in July!

Although price is a bit expensive, the resort didn’t disappoint us. It worth it! The South Eastern style architecture make us feel far away from the city. There’s quite a big bathtub in the room. Really nice for a relaxing bath with my husband, haha! A lot of details reflect the resort’s paying attention to the quality of customers’ staying, like the beautiful Thai painting on the wall, the towel folded into an elephant shape on the bed and the L’Occitate travel set in the bathroom and a super soft bed. I should also say that I appreciate their services as well. Every staff was giving a broad smile when they saw us. They also speak good and fluent English. It’s the first time we stayed at Regalia. We will definitely choose this resort brand if traveling to other cities next time.

The surrounding scenery of Regalia is very beautiful, and the interior decoration is also unique, just the style I like. There was a small snack to my room in the evening, which gave me such a surprise. It is said that Regalia in Tangshan will open soon; I am willing to have a try at that time.

The hotel is located in the 1865 Park, which is close to the Nanjing shopping district, quite convenient. And it is also a good place for traveling. Waiters are always very kind and smiling, let me feel like at home. I really enjoyed the experience of staying here.

We stayed at this resort in for 2 days/1 night during the Golden Week national holiday, in October 2010. Many excellent points to this hotel, but a few that could use improvement.

Location:
Depending on what your preference is, this could be a good or bad thing. It feels like it is in a very remote place and our taxi driver from the train station had trouble finding it. It is about 8 km or a 20 minute drive from the Nanjing railway station. There are not a lot of restaurants or shops within walking distance of this hotel. There were a few very upscale restaurants being built within 1-2 blocks, so maybe in a few months, it will have more. So if you are looking for a place that is steps from a busy, bustling location, this is not it. It is not on a main street either, so you can't step down the street to hail a taxi, the hotel will need 10-20 minutes notice to call a taxi for you. However, it is called a "resort" and if and if you are looking for peace and quiet in a serene setting, they have done a good job of that. We took cabs everywhere (to eat, shop, see the attractions). The only place we could walk to was the Confucius Temple area, which is a 25-30 minute walk.

Maybe it was the time of year we were there, but we only say a total of 8 other guests there (1 family and 2 couples) our entire stay there.

Rooms
We had a Riverside Room. We tried to get an upgrade when we checked in, but no luck. Check-in time is 2:00 and we arrived at 12. They were able to get us a room by 12:30, although, it felt like we were the only guests in the hotel.

The room had a nice view of the river and was well appointed. Nice furnishing, a very cool tub (not a jacuzzi) that is set by the window. L'Occitane toiletries, stocked mini fridge, flat screen tv. All in all, a very nice room that we were impressed with. No problems with housekeeping, the room was very clean. We received fruit in our room upon check-in, and cookies and chocolate for turn down service.

Service
When we first arrived, our impression wasn't great and that set a negative mood to the beginning of our trip. Here's why: when we checked in, they have shuttles, tours, activities, etc. listed and we tried to arrange to take part in them, but they said either it was unavailable or not possible (we couldn't get a good reason why).

Fortunately....everything went uphill from there. The next day during breakfast, we met a Manager there by the name of Magie. She provided the best care, service and information! She helped map out our own self-tour (since the hotel didn't have the one advertised), arranged the taxi. She even called to check on us because she thought we might be late coming back and didn't want us to miss our train back to Shanghai. She was one of the nicest staff we have met at any hotel and wanted to give her props. Spa services were excellent too (see below)

There is supposed to be free wifi in all common areas, but we weren't able to access it. Each room has wired internet access.

Spa
My husband used the spa services there and was able to get an appointment within 15 minutes notice. I had read in other reviews that you need to book a few days in advance, so we were happy. Also, I guess this is because the hotel seemed pretty empty during our stay too. The spa facilities were beautiful and the massage he had was excellent. His therapist was one of the best he's had (and he gets massages almost every week!)

Food/Restaurant
While waiting for our room, the front desk suggested that we have lunch in the restaurant, which they said has very good Western, Thai and Chinese food. First the beverages....they have a list of 5 or 6 beers and we went down the list asking for each one, being told they don't have it. The only one they did have was a Heineken. We asked to see the Western menu and they said the didn't have that available. We asked to see the Thai menu and they said that was not available. We started to select dishes from the Chinese menu and half the dishes we inquired about were not available. When we asked why, they said the food or drinks were difficult to get. We ended up getting some veggie dishes and a beef dish and the beef was horrible. It was filled with fat and tendons and unedible. When we pointed this out, they said this type of beef was supposed to be like that.

We had 2 buffet breakfasts included in our rate and weren't expecting much for our breakfast the next day after that experience. However, we were very pleased! They have an egg station to make eggs however you like. A small selection of fruit, but a decent selection of Western and Chinese breakfast dishes to choose from. The breakfast and other service we received made up for the initial impression of the restaurant.

Through a friend’s recommendation, I was staying in Regalia Resort in Nanking during my holiday away from home in LA, and booked a 5 hour spa 6 hand treatment! The Staff treated my friend and I with the utmost attention and the experience is one that will forever remain in my mind as the most professional and lovely experience I have ever received at a spa. The value for money was incredible, although I would have been happy to pay triple that (as I often have at other spa's around the world). Thanks and keep up the good work!
