The place is very Chinese and noisy. Filled with locals with some expats. Food very reasonably priced, service was good, food was good. Think the peking duck is over rated, surely eaten better duck, guess it is all about the number of ducks they sell rather than the taste, saying that it was tasty but not wow. They just give you the crispy duck and throw away the rest of the meat unless you ask for it to be packed, they were happy to give it and in fact even gave another duck. Overall a nice place to visit for the experience.

We had been told that this was the best restaurant for Peking duck in Hong Kong. The duck is served as one course i.e. skin and meat together whereas we prefer to have the two as separate courses. This apart it was a great experience: very very busy and noisy mostly with large table of locals, as close as most visitors are likely to come to authentic local dining.

I have been to this restaurants for quite a few times while I was living in Hong Kong and I always love their tasty Peking Duck and deep fried banana dessert, it is a perfect place for a big group of friends and every diner chatting away without ever feeling too loud. I went back to this restaurant while I was visiting Hong Kong in June, other than the duck and the banana dessert, the other dishes were good but not great. In Hong Kong today, you would probably easily find another Shanghainese restaurant that offers better quality of food than Spring Deer, but the vibe in this Spring Deer is definitely hard to match.

The street outside and the short climb up the steps to this restaurant do not do it any favours.
As you enter the restaurant you are hit by the noise of many happy diners. We didn’t book but they managed to squeeze us in. Only one red and one white wine on offer but OK. We had a glass or two of white but they constantly fill up your tea.
We had Crabmeat Soup and Peking Duck. Both were very tasty and served fast. Other dishes passing our table looked equally impressive. Next time I will be braver and try something else.
If you are looking for quiet, fine dining don't go but if you want good value, tasty and authentic food it is worth a try.

We arrived late in the evening.

Taken to a table without delay

Ate piles of crispy duck and pancakes.

it was good but not outstanding. After reading the reviews here I was expecting more.

It seems to close fairly early - around 10pm
