We had friends on a 24 hour stopover on their trip from new Zealand to England. I booked a table for four on the upper balcony 3 days in advance. We were lucky, the weather was great. Arrived a few minutes early and taken straight to our table. Great views over the bay, buzzy atmosphere - a busy restaurant. Then the troubles began.
We ordered a bucket of chicken wings; had them before and they are spicy and the meat is still moist. We also ordered two salmon sandwiches, one fish and chips and a steak sandwich plus a bottle of Giesen Estate sauvignon blanc.
The wine arrived along with water. So far so good.
20 minutes later the two salmon sandwiches arrived with the chicken wings. I explained that we had wanted the wings as a starter, got an apology but all the dishes were left at the table.
10 minutes later the fish and chips arrived. (You get a shoal of fish here, not just one; big portions.)
10 minutes later still no steak sandwich but we order a second bottle of wine. After an hour the steak sandwich arrives....but stone cold. We get a big apology and the waitress takes away to be changed and tells us that a the restaurant will pay for one bottle of the wine because if the inconvenience. Another 15 minutes still no replacement steak...now the manager apologies and says that as a result the meal will be paid for by the restaurant.
After 1 1/2 hours I get my steak sandwich. beautifully cooked and hot!
Now all this time the four of us are still having a good time given the errors made.
The staff were pleasant and helpful throughout - not sure where the problems were in the restaurant; maybe the kitchen?
So we still had a great time, the food when it did arrive was overall good, and we got the whole meal free as an apology. Do I go back? What would you do?
I will say I have been here many times over the past few years and never had this problem with The Boathouse before. I hope this is not the start of a slippery slope that so many restaurants seem to end up going down in Hong Kong.
