I was booked for one night at the Courtyard in Hong Kong. Always dependable, I rely on Marriott hotels when I am unfamiliar with an area. The rates for this hotel seemed good for a major city. Quite honestly when my taxi pulled up I was prepared for a bit of disappointment. The neighborhood seemed a bit tired and the hotel looked small. I wasn't sure about the location, but once inside, the hotel looked very clean, modern and well designed. The staff at the front desk were warm and friendly. The room was great. Overlooking the shipping end of the harbor I came to appreciate this view rather than the cityscape view that some other hotels offer. The result was that I decided to stay three days at the hotel and three more days on the return end of my trip to Hong Kong and Vietnam. I also came to appreciate the location. Central to everything I wanted to do and on major transportation routes, It was ideal for exploring Hong Kong, Kowloon, Macau and the many sights these had to offer.
I had booked an executive room, which included free breakfast and use of the executive lounge. My room was on the top floor (the 32nd) for the first stay and on the 31st floor the second stay. Great view, no noise. The breakfast at Momo Cafe was GREAT! A excellent selection of western, Vietnamese and Chinese dishes made breakfast a wonderful dining experience. The staff were superb, especially Eddie and Windy who helped navigate the intricacies of some of the unfamiliar dishes. A tip: if you are unfamiliar with Hong Kong tea, this is the place to try it. They use a reported blend of three dark teas, brewed strong. It is then mixed with condensed sweetened milk and makes a nice start to the day. They also have an excellent selection of made to order dishes, fresh fruits and juices.
The concierge, William, was simply the best! Very helpful and dead on with his recommendations. We relied on him for all kinds of advice and arrangements. He went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed.
My last comment was about the bill. It was lower than I had expected! They explained every charge before we incurred a charge including transatlantic phone calls. They made sure we knew exactly how much everything cost in advance. When the bill came there were no charges or hidden fees. There was even a discount on a couple of items that I hadn't expected. Overall a great bargain!!
