Owner description: Lovely little fishing village with many shops and seafood. Take a boat ride for lovely scenery or take a walk up the mountain to see the White Chinese Dolhins swim.

“Please avoid it”

We accidentally purchased a day-pass to visit the Buddha statue via cable car, which included a visit to this village. The round trip bus ride too an hour. The boat ride itself was only 30 minutes long. There is really nothing to see as such. We had just been to Cambodia and visited a fabulous fisherman's village. This one is tiny in comparison. The dolphin viewing was more fun for the ride than any real viewing of the elusive dolphins. This is just a tourist trap, so avoid it.

“great culture, great food”
Reviewed February 13, 2014

Great place to see the real fishing village and the real people. Do not stick to the touristy streets, go all around te village in tiny mazy streets, its really interesting.
Do try local street food - bbq seafood with cheese, pastry and homemade herbal tea (sold in small plastic bottles).
Do take a boat, with no hope for seeing dophins (as the boatmen promise) but to see the village from the waters.
From the village its good to take a bus or taxi to the Big Buddha, its only about 10 min away by taxi.

“Wonderful, Interesting Experience”
Reviewed February 9, 2014

I visited here on a TourEast tour of Big Buddha in December while in Hong Kong. The tour guide had even lived for many years in the Tai O village. He was able to take us to many back streets to see the real village and tell us much of the history. Hopefully the village will remain despite all of the development. Make sure to take time to walk around and see the small shops and try some of the snacks. We tried some great little donuts. All of the fish and fish products was amazing. We took a small boat out to see the houses still on stilts. It is well worth an hour or so to see the local industry and not high rises.

“Interesting fishing village with some great street snacks.”
Reviewed February 7, 2014 via mobile

TaiO is a very inteteresting village. Many of the buildings are on stilts, and fishing remains an important local industry. It is nice to walk around the village and observe life. Do stop to try some of the snacks available.
The boat trip around the village and out to the dolphins is worth doing (cheaper if you go into the village and ignore the offers at the bus stop). We did see the stunning pink dolphins, and it was good to see that the boats kept their distance and did not chase them.
We will cone back to Tai O when people visit us here in HK.

“This is the real deal”
Reviewed January 27, 2014

Get on the local bus and go see some genuine people who aren't trying to sell you something and rip you off. Really? $20 for the dolphin boat ride! What a bargain. They take you for a ride up through the village then out into the bay to see the dolphins. We didn't get too close but we did see them.
Afterwards we walked all round the village and had lunch before catching the bus back.
This is definitely a 5 star local experience.
