Owner description: Lovely little fishing village with many shops and seafood. Take a boat ride for lovely scenery or take a walk up the mountain to see the White Chinese Dolhins swim.

Want to see somthing a bit different? Then head to Tai O. This little fishing village feels like it's stuck in time and it doesn't have a feel of having been fixed up for the tourists either.

It's worth to go. Get the bus from Tung Chung but try not to go during weekend. Very beautiful. Preserved dry fish, shrimp paste...smell of fish village. Good to try.

There is a few interesting local shops selling dried seafood and wide variety of yummy seafood paste (salted fish, scallop, XO, etc). But if you came to see a real fishing village, you will disappointed. When we reach the stilt houses, it was so unimpressive that we almost thought that we are at the wrong place. When we walk in to one of the stilt houses which looked like a restaurant, we got chased away by the owner. Perhaps it was bad timing (low tide plus a little drizzle), the experience wasn't fantastic.

Just take the bus or taxi from the square near the big buddha. About ten minutes by car. Special village, dried fish, market, houses on wood poles. We were there with low tide, strangest views, fishing boats, but no water. Nice to see while you're up there on Lantau.

Tai O is often spoken of with a turned up nose ... why? Because it is a fishing village that specialies in dried fish. In the cooler months it is fine however as the weather warms up it certainly gets a bit smelly, but we still love visiting there all year around. Tai O is about a 40 minute bus ride from Tung Chung and if your lucky enough you will see some water buffalo on they way there.
From the bus stop you walk into the town passing by many varieties of fish alive and dried. When you get to the small bridge you will see many companies offering to give you a ride out into the bay to spot some pink dolphins ($50pp) . On a calm day they can usually be seen year around. This bridge is also a good vantage point to view of the fishing boats and houses by the water side built on stilts. The boat ride out to view the dolphins also takes to around the houses on stilts and fishing boats. It really is a pretty town with great Souvenirs available + lovely photos of days gone by when the small bridge was a ferry raft pulled from side to side by the towns people.
