“Tiny Standard Rooms But A Good Value”
Reviewed March 4, 2012

I recently stayed at the Cosmo for several nights. Located just a block from the Happy Valley Racecourse and between Wan Chai and Causeway Bay, this highrise hotel offers value for your money. I found the staff (front office clerks, concierge, and housekeeping staff) to be friendly and helpful.

As others have mentioned, the standard rooms are small and clean, but functional, and unless you plan on spending a lot of time in the room it serves its purpose as a place to lay your head at night. The more expensive rooms may be more spacious. I was assigned a room on the front side of the hotel which offers nice views of Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. A friend who stayed at this hotel recently said he stayed in a room facing the back of the hotel. The windows in his room were frosted (presumably due to the cemetary located directly behind the hotel) and could not be opened. If you want a nice view, ask for a room facing the front of the hotel.

The bed was firm but for me was relatively comfortable. The sheets were crisp and clean. The bathroom was functional (shower only) but extremely small and narrow (approximately 2 feet or less). There was absolutely no counter space (see photos) and barely enough room to move around if the bathroom door was closed. I found myself having to use the counter outside of the bathroom to store things I needed use while in the bathroom.

There was also very little storage space for clothes; only a small closet with enough room to hang a few things.

The room had a small safe inside the clothes closet. There was a computer at the work desk but there was a charge to use it. I believe WiFi was free. Two bottles of water were provided daily. The room had a flat screen TV with a number of English language, in addition to Chinese language, options.

The Wan Chai MTR Station is an easy 10 minute walk from the hotel as is the Causeway Bay MTR Station. Times Square is also an easy 10 minute walk from the hotel. The hotel offers free shuttle service to different parts of Hong Kong Island at regular intervals throughout the day, but there are inexpensive public buses that stop directly in front of the hotel (The Route #10 bus (HK$3.40) will take you to Admiralty and Central) that will take you to many different places on the island, and a short walk to Johnston Road will give you access to the trams that traverse HK Island.

If you need to do laundry, there are several Sunshine Laundry outlet stores both in Wan Chai and Causeway Bay that will inexpensively handle your laundry needs. They charge by weight. See this website for locations: http://www.sunshinelaundry.com.hk/e-index.shtml

GETTING THERE

The easiest way to get to the hotel from HK International Airport is by hotel shuttle bus. Go to counter B12 or B1 outside of customs / immigration to make arrangements. Busses leave about every 30 minutes and cost HK$150 (about US$19) and will drop you off at the hotel. Depending on traffic and how many other travelers are on the same bus, and the order in which you are dropped off, the bus ride can be anywhere from 45-75 minutes.

An alternative is to take the Airport Express Train for HK$110 (about US$14) to HK Station (25 minutes travel time) then take a taxi to the hotel. From HK Station you could walk to the Central MTR Station and take the MTR to Wan Chai or Causeway Bay Stations but it's a bit of a walk if you have luggage and rather inconvenient.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the front of the hotel for nice views over Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. Windows...

Thank you for praising us as a good value for money! We offer various room types for a different room size and views while a majority of our rooms face the city junction of Causeway Bay. The hotel provides laundry/dry clean/pressing service and it’s as easy as putting the items inside the laundry bag and leave them for collection inside the guest room. Thank you for your travelling tips, very helpful for our upcoming guests! We wish to be of service to you soon!

Location in about 5 minute walk from Time Square MTR station in causeway bay exit A. We book the standard room but was upgraded to a very nice and bigger studio room. The room is very clean and comes with a very comfy bed, sofa, writing table, tea and coffee, 2 bottles of mineral water, slippers, toiletries and bath with bathtub. Our room in the 5th floor is where the outdoor terrace that offers wifi, complimentary 24/7 coffee and water dispenser is located. The hotel also offers complimentary shuttle service to Time Square, HK central Station, Admirality and Wan Chai on a schedule basis. The breakfast buffet is delicious although not that much variety but change daily during our stay. Book early on their website and get the best rate as what we did.

Room Tip: Book early in their website and get the best rate. Rooms in the 5th floor is the best location.

Spent a week here recently, and would say it was decent enough, if slightly lacking in space and amenities.

The room I had (standard) was absolutely tiny - I was on my own, but it would be a nightmare if two people were sharing, as there's just no space for two people to sit, other than on one side of the rock-solid bed. There was a desk, but because there was no room for a chair, you had to sit on the end of the bed if you had any intention of sitting at it, and more space in the room was taken up with a suitcase stand. Oddly, the bathroom was actually reasonably spacious, with a good shower.

I didn't see a huge amount of the rest of the hotel - there's a bar, which has as much atmosphere as a burst spacesuit, and an outdoor terrace on one of the mid-level floors. Don't waste your money in the massively overpriced bar (although it's a handy place to get an hour of free wi-fi, rather than paying for it in the room) - there are some nice little local places walking down towards Times Square, where the drinks are cheaper, and there's a bit of a buzz about the place.

Location-wise, it's about a ten minute stroll from Times Square and the MTR (the bus really isn't necessary), and that's you down in the heart of Causeway Bay, where there are loads of shops and restaurants to explore. As mentioned, there are a lot of little bars tucked up local side streets, which are definitely worth a look. Happy Valley racecourse is literally seconds away, so if you're after a flutter on the ponies, you'll be happy.

Overall, I'd say it's a reasonable enough place to stay for the price, with a location that's handy enough to get to local shops, bars and restaurants on foot. There's easy access to the MTR, and at night, a taxi from Central really isn't expensive (around 33.50HKD). On the flip-side, the room I had was tiny, the bed was like a brick and the bar is rubbish.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back of the hotel have frosted windows, and no view as a result.

Thank you for your review. Cosmo Hotel offers different room types for selection featuring various room sizes up to 83 sq. m.. In fact, if there’s anything you need in the room, our housekeeping staff and 24-hour on duty guest services manager will be able to assist as a majority of the rooms do have a chair inside. If a fluffier sleep experience is what sought after, mattress topper can be provided upon request. We are pleased to know that you like our bathroom and the shower.
The Nooch Bar at the lobby serves award-winning cocktails with a jazzy ambiance. Location-wise, the hotel is just an easy 5-8 mins walk down to the centre of Wan Chai or Causeway Bay where a full selection of eateries, restaurants, bars, pubs, cafes and shops are nestled. The hotel also provides free daily shuttle to Times Square (Causeway Bay), and other landmarks in Wan Chai, Admiralty, Central and Quarry Bay. Happy Valley racecourse is less than a 5-min walk away where horse race takes place and a good venue for morning exercise. Thank you again and hope to see you back soon!

I don't think we will stay here again. The rooms are unworkably small (we were here 6 nights), our room is showing its age, Also I can't prove this but I am pretty sure the floor (there's not much of it!) wasn't vacuumed the time we were there, The front desk on checking in tried to upgrade us with a "promotion" which was quite expensive and I hate the idea anyway that when you arrive you are subjected to a "promotion" for the hotel's benefit. The internet in the wifi area called The Breeze didn't work more than it did (lots of people finding the same problem). And our room had frosted glass windows. We couldn't tell if it was raining, sunny or anything. Have they done this to his the view of the cemetery?

What was good? The coffee machine in The Breeze was fantastic. It automatically grinds the beans for a fresh cup of coffee that can be turned into a cappuccino. I was impressed despite the wifi only working 30% of the time. The hotel doesn't have any small shops nearby, it's a walk to get your own supplies and it is rather isolated even though the shuttle bus from next door was highly efficient. I found the beds good and the service to change your pillow gave us a firm one that we're used to.

We had a glass of wine in the Nooch bar one night. Had to wait for service quite a time and it was $HK80 a glass and hardly a rare vintage! The hotel seemed to be very popular though, I think their marketing people are good at the job. Another thing that was unexpected was the Breeze where it was a bit like a backpackers where people started talking to each other about where they'd been, complaining about the hotel and the wifi etc. I found this very friendly.

I think it was OK for a bargain rate but probably not again.

We booked a standard room and I have to say that it's the smallest hotel room I've ever been in. I guess if you travel alone it's fine, but if you're a couple and have more than 1 carry-on, I suggest you stay at the Cosmopolitan hotel instead, which is just 2 buildings away.
You can hear the noises from the hallway, including the cleaning service staff who do their rounds in the morning, so make sure you put 'privacy please' tag on your door knob if you don't want them to knock on your door In the morning.

On the positive side, the bathroom was modern and clean.

Cosmo Hotel offers various room types including a very spacious 83 sq m which can fit into 6 guests at a time. All rooms are already equipped with sound proof facilities to ensure in-room privacy, if in case a room change is required, our 24-hour on duty guest services manager will be delighted to arrange if situation allows. We are happy to know that you reckon our bathroom modern and clean.

In fact, our sister hotel Cosmopolitan next door offers hotel accommodation featuring 454 rooms with a room size ranges from 22 to 48 sq. m. with most of the rooms facing the stunning race course or city view. We hope to welcome you back soon at either hotel!

All in all this hotel is pretty good value for money. The staff are friendly and the hotel itself is very clean. The only downside is the size of the rooms (they are very small) and there isn't much wardrobe space so you pretty much have to live out of a suitcase. The beds are very hard (like sleeping on concrete :o)) and if you have a room that's high up it gets very cold at night if you go during winter months. On a positive note the room was cleaned every day, room service was good and the bathroom was modern. Also on our last day we were able to leave our suitcases at the hotel whilst we made the most of final day, we could then come back and pick them up ready for our night flight home.

The hotel was central, and the buses stop right outside so you can get pretty much anywhere on the island. Probably more suited to adults/business people rather than those with young families. Ideal if you're travelling on a budget.

Room Tip: go for one of the bigger suites.

We are happy to hear that you agree with our good value for money! For the room size, we have different options up to a spacious 83 sq. m. for a 2-bedroom suite catered for travelers of different purposes. Our beds are actually from the worldly famous Simmons brand which has widely received positive recognition. Yet we also understand that sleeping is a personal experience so if a fluffier support is what sought after, we also provide mattress topper and our housekeeping staff will be delighted to arrange. We hope all our guests would be able to make the most out of their stay so we generously offer free on-day suitcase storage service. Our hotel has also recently launched the 24-hour check-in/out service accommodating guest with a flexible check-in/out time! This offer is exclusive for all official website bookings and booking through this channel can enjoy periodical special offer such as free breakfast or Internet. With the 24-hour check-in/out service, guest can come and get the room key anytime of the day and be assured they aren’t required to check out until a full 24 hours has passed. More details are available on official hotel website.

Location-wise, Cosmo is amid Wan Chai and Causeway Bay and an 8-min walk to the nearest subway station. Bus stop is right outside the hotel, while there is also a tram stop 1-min walk away. Hope to welcome you back soon!

The hotel is located right near the Happy Valley Racecourse and is reasonably close to Times Square and it is possible to take shuttle buses from their nearby sister hotel to other locations including Hong Kong Station for the Airport Express.

The room itself was tiny and before the hotel writes a generic response about all the difference sized room options, I wish to detail what the standard room is like. The room was a nice orange/yellow tones and the beds were quite hard, but the quilt was so soft that it was like being hugged. We could quite clearly hear the room next door and it does not offer peace and quiet that the manager assures. There are compartments on the side of the room that contains the kettle and water, but there is very little room to actual store any clothing and so it was very hard to live in. Additionally our room curiously faced a massive cemetery.

I was unimpressed on arrival the manner of fact approach to check in and the demand for a $120 AUD deposit for 'incidentals'. We had already paid our room cost for the 4 nights we were staying $500 or so, and so it seemed quite rich that they required more money then and there. I questioned this and asked why they wouldn't just require an imprint of a card, but didn't push it further. This policy should be made much clearer on the online reservation form and the staff should actually advise how much deposit they will require. I had to specifically ask them this information.

Further to this, we had the absurd situation that at 8:15am the maid entered our room to clean it. We were asleep then. Upon realising that she left. 30 minutes later she returned, we were still in bed. Likewise on the day we were leaving, the staff entered our while I was showering clearly to begin cleaning it. Clearly when people are checking out this is unnecessary. Additionally, we left our bags in the lobby for a few hours and as we were taking the shuttle from the sister hotel - The Cosmopolitan, I went to collect my 2 bags and my friend was sitting with our other bags in their lobby while we waited. Absurdly they refused to give me my 2 and allow my friend to come back a few minutes later. Additionally, when we left our key card in our room and the front desk reissued a new one, it failed to work. Upon returning downstairs, the man looked at me in disbelief and sent a man up with me with a new card also. Naturally this card didn't work, and so he used his master key to let us in and fetch our left key cards.

The breakfast was ok - and while yes there were Asian and Western options, they were not very appetising and although eggs were on offer, it was very reflective of the hotel that nobody came round to ask for orders or offerred tea and coffee. You had to get that yourself and actively ask the wait staff.

I doubt I would return to this hotel in the future.

Cosmo is an 8-min walk to the center of Causeway Bay and the hotel provides free daily shuttle to drop off guests at various destinations e.g. Times Square mega shopping mall (Causeway Bay), Pacific Place (Admiralty), IFC Mal (Central), etc. As for room types, we offer up to 7 categories for different travel purposes with a room size as large as 83 sq m. All rooms are color-coded into yellow, orange or green for guest’s selection. Mattress topper can be provided if a fluffier sleep experience is sought after and we are pleased to know that you like the quilt! All rooms are equipped with sound proof facilities to heighten in-room privacy. If a room change is required, our 24-hour on duty Guest Services Manager will be able to arrange. A majority of our 142 rooms face the Causeway Bay city view and guests are encouraged to let us know their view preference at time of booking, we will surely arrange accordingly.
As for the deposit encounter, it is a common practice in major hotels in Hong Kong. The deposit can in fact be paid by cash (in which the guest will be paid back full amount upon check-out) or by credit card (the amount is frozen and then released upon check-out if no incidental charge is required). Thank you for your suggestions and we will ensure our staff has good product knowledge and be able to explain to guests proactively. While your encounter of our room attendants entering the room is indeed a very uncommon case. Upon receiving your review, our housekeeping team has been seriously briefed about the room cleaning procedure and make sure that no similar occasion will occur again. Our apology for the key card incident and for the inconvenience that was caused. On grounds of security, stored bags will only be released to the guests who are holding the matching luggage tag as this is to protect our guest’s belongings from being lost. Your comments on the breakfast service are duly noted and will be reflected to the restaurant accordingly.
