Holiday Inn Express Hong Kong Causeway Bay
Ranked #139 of 721 Hotels in Hong Kong
Reviewed June 3, 2013

If you'd like to be in the center of the action in HK, Causeway Bay is where you should stay and Holiday Inn Express is a great choice in the area. It's just behind the popular Times Square. They even have a backdoor through the Basement Level of Times Square which brings you right opposite the road to the entrance of the hotel in Sharp Street. I think it's open till like 11pm so quite convenient, especially if you're coming via the MTR, you can just pass through indoors. Location-wise, it's close to shopping, food, etc. And because it's behind and not in front of Times Square, the street is pretty quite at night.

The exit for Times Square from the MTR trains are actually quite a walk, but everything is indoors, so it's quite useful especially when it rains, and you're also away from the crowd moving in different directions above on the streets. Buses are also quite convenient. Just head out the opposite way, left side when you come out of the hotel to Canal Road, plenty of buses to choose from, and even trams. There's even a local bus line there that brings you directly to Ocean Park, with the local rates (I think about $5+) rather than the usual tourist targetted express buses that go from Central/Admiralty ($12).

From the airport, best to take the bus, which stops at a nearby street. If you take the MTR, it is also possible but is a longer walk underground.

Rooms are actually surprisingly average in size, compared to the mostly small compact rooms in similar hotels. For two people, it's quite comfy. For those with kids, it can be a bit crowded esp when you lay out the sofabed.

I love the beds, the mattresses, linens and pillows were really clean, comfy and soft just like the high end hotels. The carpet and sofabed could so some cleaning though, I think I did get a bedbug bite not from the bed, but from sitting on the sofa.

All the amenities are available, including wifi and LAN connection in each room. Wifi was spotty though since my room was at the end of the hall. But since there is a LAN connection, I had an good alternative. So not a problem.

Breakfast was included and they included 4 options of set breakfast. I had a different one each day. Western was eggs, 2 pcs ham or sausage, a pastry, fruits, juice and coffee/tea. Chinese was Congee, sausage, chinese bun, fruits, juice and coffee/tea. And another choice was Noodles, sausage/ham, fruits, juice and coffee/tea. The other one was vegetarian. You can also have it packed if you do not wish to eat at the restaurant. Or if you skip one day and want to avail of a double one the next day, it is ok since they just give you coupons that is not dated and expires on the day of check out.

Staff who handled my check-in was great. She was friendly, and efficient. Since I had to wait for a few minutes due to a request, she even approached me at the waiting area to give me my key. I would expect this service from a five star hotel but is quite a bonus for a holiday inn express. Unfortunately, this is not true of all staff. My friend who also checked in that day didn't have a good experience.

Lobby area was small but clean, although there is this one part in the sitting area where the airconditioner drips water on the people sitting there, and through the four days we were there, no one bothered to fix it. Or they could have easily moved the sitting area a bit to avoid the drip on the guests.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room, it's a bit bigger than similar rooms in the middle. It's also less n...

Location wise this hotel is at its best. Shopping plaza, underground station, bus station, tram station all at 30-50 meters away from this hotel.

Expresss check in and check out makes it breeze through the reception.

To my surpirse, room size is pretty good and can easily accommodate 3rd person on sofa bed which is actually of a size of a small queen size bed

Breakfast is a set menu option with only 4 options. Serving size is really small.

Overall I still recommend this hotel

Surprisingly many good hotels in Hong Kong did not allow 2 Adults + 2 Kids in a room (even if the 2nd kid is an infant). But this hotel provided that option and their rates were very reasonable compared to high hotel room costs in Hong Kong.
They provided us with 1 Dbl + 1 Single + 1 Sofa bed, but we transferred to another smaller room as we dint want to stay in a "smoking room". Customer service was good. Their sofa bed is so-so, maybe just good for a kid and not an adult.
Hotel is Very near to causeway bay MTR BUT there is no Lift nearby if you are travelling with a stroller. However we found that there is a "service elevator" that was offered to us by the security personnel at Times square - they were very helpful!

Room Tip: Room with 1 Dbl+ 1 Single + 1 sofa bed is huge and is wheel chair accessible. But this is a smoking...

I stayed here for 3 nights for business trip. The location is great and very convenient for transportation as well as shopping. It will be definitely great location especially for female travelers who wants to spend. Breakfast was set menu on 6F, simple and sufficient. Only one concern was sound isolation for both internal and external.

During my November 2012 trip to HK I stayed in both Holiday Inn Express Soho and Causeway Bay.
This hotel needs renovation, the rooms are much lower class than Soho, but the location is just great if you are staying for business or shopping.
If you are deciding which one to choose - certainly Soho because it's simply new.

Room Tip: Make sure that the room is non-smoking

I love the Holiday Inns and Holiday Inn Expresses in China and Hong Kong but this one falls quite short of the usual standards. Our room was dirty- coffee mugs, carpets, the baby cot's linens looked at least dingy (I wouldn't let her sleep there), pull out sofa had something that looked like blood on it in a few spots. The room had an iPhone dock (great, love this) but had a CRT tv. The breakfast was included but was terrible besides being clean.

The area is great for shopping but the subway in Hong Kong is so convenient that I didn't find it to be a big selling point. Plus from the subway you take exit A (closest) but it's such a far, far walk. I couldn't believe it!

I highly suggest you choose the nearby Holiday Inn Express Soho instead which is much more updated and about the same price and w a much better breakfast. You can read my review on that hotel as well.

Tucked in a bylane behind Times Square and with no direct Airport Limousine connection this is one Holiday Inn I would rather never stay in again .Reception is not on ground floor and you have to bring up the luggage yourself .The check in staff was cordial and spoke and understood english .The free breakfast isa big joke ..you are just dished out 2 Bread slices , a tea or coffee and an egg ..with one butter ..you ask for butter you better be prepared to pay .Which is what happened to us on asking for another butter and another toast ! That's when we decided never ever to stay in this highly priced hotel.
