“Umm they're steps...”

Colonial Duddell Street Steps
Reviewed April 20, 2013

Yeah, they're "colonial" but...they're steps. Not particularly festive of lovely by any means. However, the two gas lamps there were a bit more lovely and worth a photo if you're in the area, but in retrospect...probably not worth the time it took to find the place (it is a bit hidden).

If you're from Hong Kong, it's almost mandatory that you'll have some photos in full wedding regalia taken of you standing on these steps with your soon-to-be spouse.

If you're not from Hong Kong, you might be wondering about the significance of these steps. Well, they're historic steps, possible the first steps the British made. Or some other lie to tell to tourists. At the top of the steps are some lamps. Once upon a time they were gaslamps. Now they're electric. Times change, and we change with them.

The other change from a few years ago is that there's now a Starbucks nestling by the side of the steps, so as part of any historical walk around Hong Kong, you can walk up the old steps, dodge the soon-to-be-marrieds recording one last moment before matrimony, and then stop for a coffee. Whole thing will take no more than five minutes, apart from getting into Duddell Street (which in the week seems perpetually filled with angry taxi drivers trying to get back out, slowly reversing minivans, and (for the last three months) a constant cloud of dust from building work.

In the Central District, not far from Lan Kwai Fung and the Foreign Corespondents' Club (FCC) you can find the old Duddell Street Steps and four gas lamp posts, dating from the colonial period. There are four lamp posts that remain active, being turned on around 6pm each evening and put out around 6am each morning while being maintained by our local gas provider, Hong Kong and China Gas Company.

This is not a hugely important attraction when visiting Hong Kong or the Central district but it is of historical interest to some and worth the out of the way walk and 5 minutes of your time to see.
