“Wan Chai seedy?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2013

Google the following three words: Wan Chai seedy. You'll get 117,000 hits. But then again, Melbourne and Sydney and San Francisco have their fair share of seedy areas.

I would say that some parts are seedy along Lockhart Road, as expatriates (no I'll call them foreigners because really expatriates are foreigners after all) make a valiant effort to make Wan Chai the next Red Light District. But really it's probably more Red Lite. Where do these expatriate/foreigners come from? Are they on leave from Singapore? G'day mate!

I stayed at Novotel and it's a great hotel amidst the seediness. The guests are a "heady mix" of folk...some genuine tourists, some ne'er do wells who I guess got their paws on hotel vouchers.

The restaurants in Wan Chai are decent ranging from local to foreign fare.

If you are travelling with a young family, lodge in the HK Disneyland Hotel. Seriously.

“Tonnes of clubs and nightlife”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2013

This is one of the three main areas in Hong Kong to go for the nightlife. There are restaurants, "legitimate" clubs, and topless/working girl clubs. If you are easily offended, don't come here at night....coming in the day to eat or shop will be fun....but it will be too scary/shocking at night. If you want to party at night, it is great.

“Wanchai - a HK experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2013 via mobile

First visit after a strong recommendation from a friend. It's a must visit place when she is in HK.

100% true.
Enjoyed the local market which has Thai grocery shop. Fish were jumping about in container.

The meat stall was full of local and Filipinas speaking fluent Cantonese.

THERE IS a shop that sells just noodles, spring roll skins and wonton skin. Since 1945!! It's a Wanchai Icon. It's at Tai Wo Street.

There are some toy shops but much less than Fuk Wing St in Sham Shui Po.

And the public toilet are very clean!

Come and Visit Wanchai !

“Fresh market, small cheap stores, seedy bars”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

There is a large outdoor food market located in Wan Chai that sells everything from fresh chicken, fish, vegetables, meat, baked goods etc. It's quite busy and "dirty" if you're not used to that type of environment. Wan Chai also has an abundant amount of small stores that sell cheap every day items or export/outlet clothing. The bars in Wan Chai are seedy. A lot of prostitutes hang out in the area as well as old expats... It's also not particularly lively or atmospheric. The other sort of people hanging out in Wan Chai are underage high school aged international students. I would avoid going to Wan Chai for the night life and go to LKF instead.
