Comfortable Reasonable & Affordable Clean Hotel with fresh air in Residential Area

Review of Caritas Lodge
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 4, 2012
Husband & I had been stayed in Caritas Lodge 1 week in the month of April/2011 & 1 week in the month of Oct./2011 twice last years. We required & paid for the triple room instead of double room due to their triple room is much spacious. Triple room is very clean has 3 comfortable single beds plus living room with sofa, coffee table, TV, refrigerator & air conditioning plus lots of windows you could open if you want fresh air & also facing at the back less noisy. Furniture were dated but is well equipped. Bath room is small but clean has bath tub with shower head. Hotel is located in up scale residential area & wealth school district for elementary & high school. In the morning you will see a lots of school kids in the street but in the evening is very quiet. Their restaurant offered good tasty western & Chinese breakfast. As hotel guests you will have 20% off from their restaurant menu.

Prince Edward MRT & Mong Kok MRT is about 15 minutes walk. Prince Edward shopping mall is about 10 minutes walk, lots of restaurants & shops along Prince Edward Rd all the way to Nathan Rd. You will see lots of shops everywhere.

Take A1 bus in Prince Edward Rd, the bus will travel to Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei , Jordan & Tsim Sha Tsui, these 4 areas were the tourist areas very convenience for shopping.

We enjoyed staying in Cartias Lodge, husband & I had already booked the triple room for Dec/2012. Hong Kong hotel & hostel are very expenses, it is very hard to find any hotels & hostels will able to offer me comfortable clean room but affordable price in up scale residential area with fresh air.
Date of stay: October 2011
Room Tip: Ask room facing at the back; room price quoted without breakfast Is much cheaper.

It was a 3 person room with 3 single beds. Good thing was very spacious comparatively speaking in HK standard. Decoration and facilities were old and needed renovation. But after renovation, the price may shoot up. So give and take here.
Moderate (at least 15 min) distance walk to Prince Edward MTR or Mong Kok East MTR. Same as 15 min walk to major bus stops (cross harbour bus). No direct public transit from airport. Better to take taxi door to door from airport which cost about HKD 250-300; ok if share by 3 people. Nice upper middle class neighbourhood. Right behind St. Thersa Church. Good for daily mass for devoted Catholics. Flower market and bird garden on the way to Prince Edward MTR.

Room tip: higher floor rooms (6th floor or above) have better view.

Caritas Lodge was excellent value for money. Our room was spacious enough by Hong Kong standards, and contained a safe as well as a fridge and television (local channels only, including two English ones). The breakfast was good, with a number of choices, and it was a buffet on Saturday and Sunday. There was a library on the premises where we could use the internet, and the room had a window that could be opened - a big plus for us. The free newspaper, The Standard, was available in the lobby - generally hard to find in Kowloon. Staff were friendly and helpful.

The location is not particularly interesting, but there are bus stops nearby with regular buses to other areas, and there is a large mall within close walking distance.

When we paid the bill the expected 10% service charge was not added on, which was a significant saving.

We stayed at two hotels in Hong Kong and this was definitely the better of the two and at about two thirds the price. We will definitely stay here when we return to Hong Kong.

This is a small, clean and friendly hostel in Kowloon Tong, an area known to locals for its low rise homes and wealthy residents - who included film star Bruce Lee. Away from the main hotspots of the territory the area nevertheless has some fascinating sights including Yau Yat Chuen, the Bird Market and the Flower Market all within a few minutes walk. Access to downtown is most easily gained by the number 104 bus next to the hotel and which runs an express service to Wanchai and Central.

Rooms are clean and cable internet is free. The cafe is worth a particular mention as it offers what must be some of the best value meals in the city with soup and main dish combos a delicious bargain at around $US5. Nearby on Boundary Road two gas stations contain convenience stores for snacks and drinks while nearby Prince Edward Road ( with the MTR) offers dozens of local eating and shopping opportunities. A different side of Hong Kong with a more local flvour and well worth trying out.

Room is clean. Bed OK. location is bad - no convenience shop of any size. 15-20 min walk to MTR station. Rooms are so noisy because of speeding traffic just outside. Front desk people don't know how to smile. None know any directions to buses. Cafe staff have poor manners.
Room cleanup staff are nice.Whole room has only one electrical outlet - they loaned us an adapted. The room is so small with a mini sized desk.. Spoiled my trip. Should have paid more for a better room and location. A waste of money here.

October 2011

Just came back.

Likes: Breakfast included. May be viewed as 'limited portions'. It was OK for me as I'm not a big eater at breakfast. Better to have the convenience of breakfast being served in the same building than having to walk 10 minutes to the nearest McDonalds. (McDonalds located in the Mong Kok East Station. Please note ,it is the Mong Kok EAST station)
- yes, there is internet in the room, ask for cable
- Reception staff was helpful
- Bed was quite comfortable
- Bus routes located directly in front of building and the next street behind
- getting to tourist sites, not a big problem,as the bus routes and MTR are accessible.
- take dirty laundry to Cleaners (mere half block away) Inexpensive. Not Self Serve.
- Reasonable room rates
- room cleaned everyday
- non smoking rooms available
- 20% off for lunch and dinner
- Chinese newspaper delivered daily

Dislikes
- have to walk 10 minutes to nearest MTR
- Coffee served with breakfast is from instant coffee grounds (not brewed like in restaurants)
- needs renovation. Very much still a 60s to 70s decor inside
- bathroom is a bit small but is adequate depending on your needs
- only one outlet visible in room, none found in bathroom
- noisy air con
- TAXIs not very willing to take us back from Monk Kok shopping district.
But costs about $20- - 25 HK)

-

Room tip: Non smoking rooms available. Familiarize yourself with the bus routes.
