“A bit of a disappointment”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2012

Having read good things about the island in various books and reviews we were looking forward to the trip. We had been tempted by the idea of a junk cruise but because of the price 550 hkd and the fact that you had to make your own way back from Stanley led us to the local ferry - good value at 16 hkd which is about £1.50. The trip which was about 30 minutes was pleasant but the harbour at Yung Shue Wan was very scruffy and uninteresting with the enormous power station chimneys poking up over the hill behind. . We had a very mediocre seafood lunch at the Sampan though pleasantly served and not eye-wateringly expensive. Though there is no car traffic, the locals race around on sort of quad trucks which are noisy and dangerous.

“Sampan Restaurant Lamma Island”

Simply the best seafood I have ever had - try the deep fried squid. You will find it soon after you get off the ferry

“Good for a lazy hike around the village, and fresh sea food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2012

I wouldn't really call this a destination if you are in Hong Kong for a short vacation/ visit. But if you have already been to all the 'tourist' places and are looking for something different, Lamma Island could fit in.

The ferry from Central takes around 40 minutes to get to Lamma. The first thing you will notice is the array of restaurants. We found it really difficult to get past these without succumbing to the allure of good food. After the protracted brunch, we headed to the nearby beach. It is not a strenuous walk, but is not a very small distance. It is fair to say that you would have digested just enough to let you jump into the sea by the time you get there. You can stay until evening to watch the sunset, then head back to Central after finishing some early dinner.

There is nothing special or exciting here, unless you are looking for a relaxed day. A perfect place to get out of the city, and enjoy a lazy day with some great food.

“Showing its age”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2012

My travelling partner and I took the 40 minute ferry trip from Hong Kong Island to Lamma Island with a view to doing a bit of walking and having lunch at one of the seafood restaurants that front the harbour to the Island. We walked from the ferry terminal for about 40 minutes, enjoying the sights along the way before heading back to the restaurant strip. There was not a lot to see on the walk other than the seascape and the yards of the residents who appear to live there. The restaurant strip is clearly showing signs of age and it would appear that there has not been a lot of capital investment in the Island for some time. The feeling was one of delapidation and tiredness and the need for a bit of a spruce up. The one thing that we did appreciate is the quietness after the hectic pace of life on Hong Kong Island - vehicles are not allowed on the Island which adds to the peaceful nature of the place. Overall probably worth a trip but nothing special.

“Close getaway with nice seafood restaurant.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2012

A short ferry ride (about 35 min) from central pier gets you to lamma island. Plenty of nice restaurants and also good hiking around the island. If you've got time in your visit its a great what to spend the day and get out of the hussle bustle.
