The big buddha is at the far end of a very touristy village containing traditional cantonese shops such as 7/11, Starbucks and the like but some of the shops have local handicrafts, the village is beautifully constructed in what I assume is a traditional looking manner and it is impeccibly clean. The Buddha is an impressive icon overlooking the village and the cable car ride to the village is worth the visit on its own. Look out for the people below the cable car making the 7.5km trek up and down 3 mountains (1500 feet according to my iPhone) to the Big Buddha and marvel at their commitment.
