“We Love This!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2014

It was not easy to find this hotel. Mostly because (at this point of time) we were unfamiliar with the area and the roads. Also, this was a very new hotel, relatively unknown to most taxi drivers. Our driver circled the area a few times before he figured out that the hotel was actually on a tiny slip road that was also part of Austin Avenue. On top of it, the main entrance and the name 'Residence G' did not stand out. One really has to look to find the hotel name 'Residence G'.

The facade may not look much, but it is a really nice hotel. One factor that attracted us was the fact that it was new, this equaled to new decor, facilities, and amenities. Over the next few days, we came to realize how truly great this little hotel is.

The walkway from the entrance to the main door was narrow but enough to fit one person with luggage in tow. The lobby was currently on the 3rd floor (which we believe to be temporary). Even then, it was beautifully furnished, modern, contemporary, and the staff were very friendly.

After a quick check in, we proceeded to our rooms. We were very pleasantly surprised! While not large, it was spacious enough. Very clever use of space. The decor was modern and contemporary, clean and stylish. The welcome note with two bottles of water and two tubes of gummy bears were a nice touch. Every day, the rooms were well kept, and very clean.

We loved the complimentary Wi-Fi!
We loved the plugs and ports for all our high-tech stuff to connect with!
We loved the morning breakfast! Coffee was great! Muffins, croissants, etc were yummy!
We loved the Rain Shower! So good to come back to the room after a long day, and have a ‘shower in the rain’.

We would have given 'Excellent' rating, but we would love for Residence G to have a higher standard to aspire to.

So here are a few points to improve on:
1. Security Card System - Few times our friends staying at Room 11-01 were locked out because the card was not working. This is frustrating, especially after a long day out, and we just wanna shower and rest.

2. Complimentary Daily Newpaper - stated in your sales brochure. But we never received any during our 5 day/4 night stay.

3. Introduction to Hotel - We noticed, a few days later, that new guests upon arrival received personal attention, with one of the staff explaining about the hotel and the facilities/amenities available. We were never given that. So actually, we did not know about the breakfast. We only happen to find out because we wanted to have coffee the 2nd day morning. Also, we were unaware of services like Pillow Menu (only found out when we returned and visited your website again), phone to assist tourists to find dining and shopping, etc. I was even surprised when I noticed the gym, and I only noticed it when we had breakfast at the patio.

Overall, we still love this hotel, and we would come back when we visit Hong Kong again. Once again, we would like to mention that we appreciate the very helpful & friendly staff. Hopefully, this time the above kinks are ironed out, please? :)

Room Tip: Rooms at Residence G are graded ‘Good’, ‘Greater’, and ‘Greatest’. We stayed in 'Good' rooms...

Great value for money. They provide a free smartphone with data and local phone facility. Helpful for local navigation.
The rooms are as shown in the website. Free water in the rooms and 'quick' breakfast in the mornings in the reception area.

We loved our stay at Residence G Hongkong. Rooms are quiet small but the space is so well-managed that it doesn't really matter. Design is great as well. Amenities well- selected. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was simple but ideal to us: Nice coffee, good orange juice and freshly baked croissants, and can be taken on the terrace if the weather allows it.

We went there with a family of four, with good expectations...however I am regret to say we did not enjoy it that much. Location wise, it is in TST, with lots of restaurants and laundry and supermarket around, closest MTR station however is still 15 min walk away which for adults I think it is ok but not for small children. Hotel reception is quite nice, staff are nice, breakfast offers freshly baked croissants (although most of time burnt), afternoon offer freshly made cookies. Room wise in HK you would not expect a large spacious ones so it is ok. The two things I am most disappointed though is cleaningness and housekeeping. The bathroom does not have a fan so it smells from the drain, a lot. Housekeeping is terrible, each day forget something, either forgot to provide clean towels,or refill shampoo / shower gel, or even take out the trash. Their cleaning standard really borders me. We went there because soft opening offer a good price, I guess it is acceptable for that price but if I go there with family again I would not choose this one. Again, if this is for business travel or just adults it is still good value.

We had a very comfortable stay. We were upgraded to the penthouse, which we totally enjoyed! brilliant views, spacious accommodation, very private. Clean and comfortable. Staff we're lovely, friendly and helpful. Fresh homemade cookies were a delicious treat! Taxi drivers were finding it difficult to find, as the hotel has only just opened. Print a map before you arrive, to avoid wasted time on your holiday!

We found this spot right after they opened, for just a short stay in Hong Kong. The service was great. The room was modern, clean and efficient with a great bed, especially compared to other places we stayed in TST.

For a design hotel I thought Residence G was well done and a good value. I've stayed in many different places in Hong Kong and in my opinion the attention to detail and quality of the furnishings exceeds the norm for hotels in this range.
This is a good choice for single travelers, couples, frequent visitors to HK or those who need/want to stay on the Kowloon side and are ok being a little removed from the tourist zone and waterfront views. As for the interior design, I liked the industrial/urban loft look - it felt cozy and relaxing after the bustle of Kowloon. They did a great job with the layout of the sleeping/desk/bathroom areas - it maximized the space. The large rain-shower was great after a long flight. Bed was comfortable. Wifi worked. There was no closet but the unique shelving unit actually functioned pretty well.
Staff was friendly, helpful and genuinely interested in the guests.
It is true that the taxi drivers are not familiar with the hotel. Print out directions (in English and Chinese) and give that to the driver. If you have luggage, a taxi from the metro or station should not cost that much. Easier than dragging it along the busy streets.
The hotel said they were putting up a new sign, and eventually the Kowloon drivers will become familiar with it, so in the future the taxi drivers will probably know the place.
If you have to take the train to Guangzhou, the hotel is very close to that station.
My one area for improvement would be breakfast - adding in cappuccino and some meats or cheeses - would be nice!
