Firstly, don’t be afraid of ChungKing Mansions. Despite many dubious reviews in many online reports, we found it safe and unproblematic, though we understand that the mass of Indian peddlers in the lobby could be daunting to some at first. Any offers for contraband can simply be ignored - just opportunists hanging round where tourists are.

The room we had in Chong King House Hotel (4th & 5th floor) was small but clean and comfi. If you're looking for budget in Hong Kong then you'll have to put up with less space. Room service cleaned and made bed every day. We even had TELEVISION!! :)

The staff was very helpful. That is, the chap who runs it during the day (I think he's the boss): he gave us good information and he also kept an eye on our backpacks while we went out for the day before our late PM flight.
(The guy at night was a bit dozy though.)

Location is great for HKG touring.

Sleep was good and thankfully we had a small window leading to an air-duct of sorts. There was building work going on at the time which stared up about 08:00 I guess but it was helpful to get us out of bed but not good if you want to stay in and watch television all day...

If you cannot put up with the 10-minute wait for the lift during peak hours, just exit the hotel using the stair well and remember where it is for when you return (we couldn't find it from the ground floor on the 1st three attempts).

All in all a good experience.

I can maybe tolerate 1 to 2 small roaches on the floor but killing 6 in 2 days; 3 on the walls, 2 on the floor and one in the bed, I mean come on! One was huge, laying on its back under one of the beds. This was in #13 room on the 3rd floor, so do not stay in here.

For $15 a night USD, it would only be worth it despite the roaches ewww ! Btw, sketchy people are always outside and downstairs by the elevators.. Sketch location

Spent our new year in HK. Location was wonderful, right at the heart of tsim sha tsui, and it was just right beside Holiday Inn, HK. We actually booked Park Guesthouse at 15th floor, but the lady told us the place was overbooked and thus recommended Chungking hse to us. It was probably a blessing in disguise as this hostel is on level 5, so instead of relying on the lifts, we climbed the stairs. FYI, there were only 2 small lifts in the whole building with numerous hostels in different levels.

The room had all the basic stuffs. It was also very clean. Except for the bed, we were quite happy with the room. Bathroom is unusually large for HK standard. Bed was a little small for two and the mattress was a little hard, but for this great price and location, we wouldnt complaint much.

Recommended for budget traveller!

I have stayed in the hotel many times, sometimes at very short notice, and Paul the manager has always found me a room. It is what you pay for and I love it, not luxury but clean but why pay high prices when you are asleep most of the time! The whole building is an experience and I have taken my grandchildren to stay there such is my confidence in the place. It is in a great location right on the Nathan Rd a few minutes walk from the harbour and a stones throw from an MTR station. I will be there again late Feb 2012.

Room tip: Book early for the best rooms.
