Most go for the Po Lin monastery and giant Tian Tan Buddha. I go because I love being on the world's longest cable car (I think). Great views and often good company. Take the MTR to Tung Chung and a brief walk to the entrance. Spend the morning and enjoy it.

We took the cable car up to Lantau Island on Friday morning. It took us over 1.5 hrs before we were finally on the cable car. The village is very commercial. The Buddha is pretty big but unless you get a vegetarian meal, you cant go to the upper floor in the buddha. The Monkey Tale show is not worth it, if you are just paying for the ticket. It is a cartoon. In terms of cost, we got the package for 140 HKD/pp which included a one-way cable car ride, a snack in the village, the monkey tale show, bus pass and short boat tour in Tai O. This is an all day trip. If you are looking for something to do, this would be suitable but I dont think that it is one of the must-see places in Hong Kong.

Some moments it seems to me that Tai O village, Tai O Heritage Hotel and views from Ngong Ping cable car impressed me more than HK skyline, permanent city smoke and luxury boutiques.
Only one tip: every of two days that we visited Lantau it was drizzly weather in HK but very sunny in Lantau. So take care of yourself and take a parasol or just hat to protect from the sun - there is no shade on the way to Big Budda.

Went to the Big Buddha Lantau Island. Caught a train from Central to Tung Chung Station, exit B. Train cost HK$24 each, one way. Walked to the Ngong Ping 360 Cable car station (2 min walk). Cable costs HK$125 each, for a round trip. Caution as a man was trying to sell cable car tickets for HK$100 each, just as you exit the train. His tix looked nothing like the tix we bought at the cable car station. So not sure if it was genuine or a scam.

Buying a tix for the cable car took a while as at each counter they were trying to convince people to buy a package deal. (Cable car, boat trip & fishing village).

We chose to go on a normal cable car (crystal cabin costs a bit more), but no thanks. Normal car was enough excitement for us.

Impressed as no clunk clunk as you go over the towers. So smooth.

Its a lovely scenic ride on the cable car. You can see the airport from above. Lots of natural bush land below you. Then you get your 1st site of the Big Buddha.

When you reach the end, you walk through a souvenir shop and they have made up the photo they took of you as you got onto the cable car. We opted for the photo of us on a keyring. Other options available. You don’t have to buy, if you don’t want, but they do hassle you a bit to buy.

Lots of souvenir shops line the path to the Big Buddha, and a few restaurants. They even had a subway food outlet there.

Opted not to walk the 200+ plus steps up to the Buddha. The view was great from the bottom. Walked around to the monestary. Back to the cable car for the trip back to Ngong Ping village.

Wanted to go to the City Gate brand outlets mall which is near the Cable Car Station. This place is shoppers heaven for brand named goods at cheap cheap prices.

The cable car between the mountain (where the big buddah is) to the railway station is amazing. It is the longest cable car I have ever been on with fantastic views over the mountains and the river. This is a must to do if you visit.
