.....and the birds must be very happy too, as the aviary is big and airy, with plenty of vegetation, trees, water features and suspended feeding stations. There is plenty of activity as the birds fly about and some of them are so loud they can even drown out the sound of nearby traffic! An utterly charming place and unique because the birds genuinely look happy. There are guide boards which help you identify the birds, as well a handy pamphlet.

If you enjoy birdwatching this is a must see while in hong kong. This aviary has a wide selection of native and southeast asian birds. For those interested in photography the birds are pretty much used to humans so just need a moderate lens can be used. There is a brochure at the entrance that will help you identify the birds

i have run out places to visit in Hong Kong, so i took my son to check out this aviary, which i visited some 15 years ago. I was impressed by the fact that there was an aviary in downtown Central then, and i am still amazed at that the Hong Kong government builds a aviary in a tropical park in the most expensive downtown area today. The park and the aviary can easily accommodate another half a dozen of major high rises in Central. The view in the park and aviary are quite unique as we were surrounded by walls of major commercial high rises, yet we are in a tropical park with ponds, waterfalls, and very lush green foliage. It is very different from being in Central park in NYC or Hyde Park in LON.

There are many types of birds here, with many tropical foliage planted in the park just for the birds. Since the aviary is not that big, but big enough to take a good 15 minutes, one can easily spend an hour here. there is also the museum of tea ware in the same park. I didn't care much about the displays, but i was quite pleased to see that the HK government actually preserved one of the oldest buildings here, the Flagstaff house, i believe that is what it is called, which is converted to the tea ware museum. I recommend this place if one wants to slow down and take a stroll in the Hong Kong park, visit the aviary or just kill a mid morning till noon.

Since the aviary is located within the Hong Kong park, that is adjacent to some of the major high rises such as the Bank of China, the Citibank and the Cheung Kong building; one can cross the Garden Rd and Cotton Tree drive to visit such buildings where pretty decent food courts can be found. We tool this itinerary to visit the aviary in mid morning, and just hit the Cheung Kong bldg food court for a quick decent lunch, i was pleased that we could kill a couple of hours in the morning on the last day of our visit in Hong Kong.

The Edward Youde Aviary is one of our very favorite free attractions on Hong Kong Island and can be found in the Hong Kong Park in the Central District.

This 3000 meter square foot area, covered by a steel mesh, includes a elevated walkway, providing a viewing perspective at the tree canopy level. This allows you to watch birds at eye level as well as above and below you. There are many natural trees, plants and a manmade running stream that flows into a shallow pool. Throughout, you feel like you are walking through the forrest canopy.

There are supposedly over 600 birds that call the Edward Youde Aviary home, not sure how many total species however. The birds, being somewhat conditioned to the presence of visitors are often very cooperative for photographers. In fact, this is one of the places we target when needing to practice shooting before trips out of Hong Kong or to simply test use new camera equipment.

In the end, we greatly enjoy the Edward Youde Aviary and consider it a great attraction within the very good Hong Kong Park. It is highly recommendable for bird lovers, photographers, families looking for child-friendly activities as well as those seeking fun free things to do/see in Hong Kong.
