I've read about this new boutique property in an article mentioning Antonio Citterio's design group as the architect and designer and thought I'd check it out. As a new hotel, they were offering attractive rates and I booked there on my trip to HK last August.
I have never stayed in the Sheung Wan area before and I must say that it is a nice area to stay at compared to the very commercial Central. 'PoHo', as some may call the area, is still inhabited by quaint cafés, art, curio and antique shops, tea houses and the like. 99 Bonham Strand is conveniently located a block away from the Sheung Wan MTR stop. Entering the reception, this is the most minimalistic-designed hotel reception I have ever seen. As you enter, there is only a 3 seater sofa on the right side, two elevators on the left side, and a reception counter at the end. Everything is in glass and monochromatic colors. The floor where my room was at only has 3, maybe 4 other rooms so it's very private. My room had a sliding partition that has a kitchenette on one side and a wardrobe closet on the other. The room is quite small, typical of a Hong Kong studio, but it worked for me.A glass table, good enough for even 6 persons, can be used as a dining or work table. Various furnitures and fixtures are designed or inspired by Citterio such as the glass and stainless headboard, just like the reception's counter, is similar to Citterio's Eos console table. The Kelvin LED lamps on each side tables are also designed by him. The sink and shower fixtures are also Citterio's line for Hansgrohe. The bathroom drawer is a Mobil, by Kartell, also designed by Citterio. The toilet and shower area is quite small but I am fine with it. The floor where I was at has a washer/dryer utility room that guests can use. This is very convenient if you are staying over for over a week or so, just like I did. They even provided laundry detergent and a laundry basket under the sink. All the basic amenities such as LCD screen, free wifi, audio system are standard. One thing, there are no food and beverage outlets in this property, as it's more a serviced residence than a hotel. But no problem as the surrounding area is teeming with cafés and rests. The experience is like having your own studio in HK. As I enjoy staying in the Sheung Wan area, I definitely see myself booking here again.
