“Awesome Brand New Hotel in HK”
Reviewed May 8, 2013

Beautiful new hotel that makes you feel special from the moment you walk in the door. Suitable for both business and leisure travellers. The rooms are a great size for Hong Kong and offer all the luxuries you would want to enjoy a holiday in HK... I enjoyed it so much that I re-booked all my HK hotels to this one for the rest of the year.

The rooms are spacious and well-appointed, with a modern feel. The location on Hong Kong island is close to many restaurants and stores. The initial impression when walking into the room as a little off-putting, with the bed in the middle of the room, but ultimately the layout worked well. Most importantly, the rooms were very quiet - I could not hear any noises from the street below or adjacent rooms.

Hello Morgan

Thank you for your great comments on the hotel, and your room, the design features that we feel add to it's individualism but also utilise the urban environment and space within the hotel to maximum advantage. I am glad you noticed the soundproofing its something we put a lot of thought into when the hotel was at design stage.

Hope to see you back in our neighbourhood soon

Best regards from Wan Chai

The Indigo is sleek, modern and in a great location. The staff were super friendly, especially Fredrick and Benny in the cafe and bars.
Walking distance to loads of great restaurants. Also has a nice roof top bar.

Only odd thing is the rooms are a touch cramped, and the bathroom very close to the bed.

Last weekend, we stayed over Hotel Indigo Hong Kong for 3 nights. We were given a free upgrade to a superior room and travelled as a couple.

The hotel is brand spanking new. Therefore, we expected that there are things that still need to be ironed out.

Before my partner and I booked a room, we e-mailed the hotel to query whether the hotel is fully open or any constructions whatsoever is still happening. We were told that the hotel is fully open and that there are no constructions occurring at the moment.

However, when we arrived for check-in, we were told that the swimming pool is not ready yet. As we were looking forward to relaxing at the infinity pool (as per one of the selling points on the hotel official website), we were ultimately disappointed. At the time of booking, the website had not mention that the pool was still not ready and we had confirmation from the hotel that the hotel was fully open and no construction was occurring. The Skybar itself is also currently in construction.

We knew that the hotel is not a 5 stars property and when we arrived early in the morning, there was no porter service offered. We were fine with that as we only had one large luggage that we could handle ourselves.

Check-in was a breeze and reception (including overall staff) is extremely friendly. Considering the hotel would not have been in full capacity, we were allowed to check-in at 9am instead of the usual check-in time. This is what every hotel should do if they are not full capacity.

The room is designed as an open plan with the king bed in the middle. It is functional yet flawed in certain areas. We do not know how a double bed room would look like but for a king bed superior room; it is probably not designed for non-couples.

As mentioned by an earlier reviewer, the bathroom design is unique. As per the open plan design, the bathroom is not separated from the bedroom. You are in full view of other apartments and buildings. Even though we cannot confirm whether the outside buildings can see through, we were not comfortable with this. Therefore, every time we showered, we had to close the curtains.

Another point of design flaw would be the shower doors. If you place a normal bath floor towel in front of the shower door, the floor towel would hinder the opening of the door. Henceforth, the floor would be wet when you open the door to retrieve your bath towel, which can only be hang outside the shower door.

The hotel has only two lifts. Perhaps, it may just be enough to cater for the number of rooms but during our stay, we waited quite a while for the lift. Also, employees share the same lift as guests.

Unlike some upper class hotels, Hotel Indigo provides free wifi. However, the wifi speed is terribly inconsistent. The room wifi signal is really good but it seems to work fast for a second and then slows down where nothing would load for the next two – three minutes. This frustrated us, as we are not able to surf the net without any disruption.

The hotel has a café but we did not try its food. We can confirm that the mini bar prices are very well priced. For reference, a can of diet coke costs HKD20.

The bed is comfortable and the room is clean. The shower is equipped with a rain shower and bath amenities are of a local boutique brand.

The hotel location is its real highlight.

It is located in the hustle and bustle of the Wan Chai suburb where you can experience the true beauty of Hong Kong. Just around the corner, you will find the wet market and plenty of food places to try. You are around a two minutes walk to Kam Fook – which serves pretty awesome Hong Kong chicken pies and next to Kam Fook is a street stall selling dim sum / yum cha dumplings etc. Additionally, there are plenty of convenience stores like 7 Eleven around the corner and a Starbucks right next to the hotel. The hotel is also just 5-7 minutes walk from Pacific Place for high-end shopping as well as Admiralty MTR station. The Wan Chai MTR station would be closer to the hotel but we usually take Admiralty as we head out in the morning for breakfast along Queens Road.

Just bear in mind that Hong Kong taxi drivers do not know many places. Therefore, we usually tell them to head to Hopewell Centre, a small shopping mall, which is located on the opposite side of the hotel. To identify Hopewell Centre, you would notice a Rolls Royce or McLaren showrooms. Coming out of Hopewell Centre, turn right and you would see Starbucks. The hotel is located next to Starbucks.

As pedantic as the above flaws may sound, we still believe a good hotel usually meets most guests’ needs. At the end of the day, I would still like to applaud the staff for their friendliness and willingness to make this hotel a good hotel. Considering the special opening price we paid, it would be considered as awesome value!

We understand the hotel is still new and there are many areas of improvement. Considering this, we would not be so harsh in rating the hotel. Once the hotel settles in, we would love to come back in the future and give it another chance to impress us.

I was probably the first few guests to have stayed in this hotel on their first day of soft opening last month, and boy, I was impressed!
Wan Chai has never been my favourite area for the notorious crowd and traffic, but I guessed having stayed in Indigo would probably change my narrow perception of this area. Nicely located along the main street, its hard to miss Indigo, with its gleaming and clean-cut exterior, and the prominent Indigo logo. Nearest Wan Chai subway station is just a 5-10mins walk from hotel, and I must say I actually enjoyed the short walk, with all the wonderful eateries lining the streets, especially for a foodie craze like myself.
One thing that strikes me and left a really nice impression is the staff's service level for such a smallish boutique hotel - one of the best I experienced in HK! Plenty of greetings and smiles from the young team there, but most importantly, I could sensed their sincerity and warmth to make every guest's stay memorable. Considering that soft opening period was probably their first encounters with guests, I'm really impressed by the team behind the operation.. KUDOS!
Got a high floor 30-40sqm room, but unfortunately with a view next to a office building. But hey, this is HK and I can live with that, especially with the auto shut-off curtains and blinds at the touch of a button, that provides plenty of nice privacy in the colourfully decorated room. Choice of colors in the room was very tasteful and eye-pleasing, especially with the artwork and little decos. Feeling to me was like walking and living in a small art gallery or those very beautifully ID shophouses selling lifestyle goods along Wan Chai.
Of course there were minor hiccups, more so for a newly launched hotel, like water ponding from bath area all the way to the bedroom, or scent of fresh paints or furnitures. But these are expected and minor to me, which I felt the hotel managed them very well.
Will be returning to Indigo again next weekend, and I'm really looking forward to another wonderful experience.

Our family (2 teenage sons and husband and I)recently stayed in this brand new hotel in the area of Wan Chai on Hong kong island. The location was wonderful...right in the middle of a great shopping area with some wonderful restaurants all around! The hotel itself is beautifully designed -giant automatic metal doors swing open and a colourful ,musical incense filled reception immediately welcomes and relaxes you.Check in was a breeze and off to our rooms we went. The rooms themselves are small-though for Hong kong ,really quite generous...and thoughtfully designed.Light , bright , and modern , but with some wonderful quirky very Hong kong touches...and the beds are actually SOFT! ! If you have spent any time in asia you will know how rare this is.Everything is state of the art....ipod charger connected to speakers ,flat screen tv ,curtain and light controls on the bed side board and a big reason we decided to stay in this hotel.....free wifi EVERYWHERE....yes...and we were able to connect as many devices in each room as we wanted...big plus when compared to every other hotel I have ever stayed in ,where you are charged an arm and a leg for 1 device per room...meaning , if you both have phones and/or computers , you have to take it in turns to work or email!..at last...a hotel that exists in the technology age with me.
The staff were attentive and very helpful with finding local shops and restaurants , and even spent ages on their computers looking for cinema sessions for us to see.The pillow menu was a godsend ,they were very prompt when called to bring anything to the rooms. My only issue(but it is always the same in Hong Kong) is no bath tub to relax in.
My husband and I travel A LOT for work all over asia, and particularly in Hong kong...and this is without a doubt the best hotel we have stayed in here. And the room rate we got on booking.com was pretty good too! There is no question that i will try to stay here in the future...I hope it doesn't get so popular that it will be hard to get a room next time....we love it!!

Room Tip: the corner rooms have windows on 2 sides....lovely!

Though a relatively new hotel, the word 'compromise' is definitely not within their vocabulary. Every step from reservation to room design they are perfectly planned.
Friendly and helpful staff indeed and great location.
Positively, a vibrant hotel without parvenuism ;)

Will surely be back!
